BOONE, NC – Rakel Logadottir set a new UNCG career assist mark as she assisted on both of Amy Carnell's goals in UNC Greensboro's 3-1 win over Appalachian State on Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference women's soccer action.
Logadottir's two assists give her 37 for her career, breaking Kati Kantanen's mark of 35 set fron 1995-97. Logadottir, a senior from Hafnarfjordur, Iceland, tied the mark three weeks ago at home against Coastal Carolina, but had not recorded an assist in the interim. She now has eight assists in 10 games this season.
Sophomore Jessie Jay, a native of Raleigh, NC, also had two assists for UNCG, her first collegiate points. The win snapped a three-game road losing skid for UNCG (6-4-0, 2-1-0 SoCon).
After a scoreless first half, Carnell got UNCG on the board first 3:34 after the intermission. Logadottir started by putting the ball in play from a corner kick. Deven Beachum flicked the ball from there and Carnell banged a loose ball into the back of the net for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Carnell made it a 2-0 game at 64:46 when scored from five yards out with assists from Logadottir and Jay. Carnell, a junior from Lake Stevens, WA, leads the team with seven goals this season, four of which have been game-winners.
Appalachian State (5-5-0, 2-2-0 SoCon) cut the deficit in half when Courtney O'Brien converted a penalty kick at 70:33.
However, Emilie Stewart, a redshirt sophomore from Dallas, TX, scored on a header at 73:36 as Jay recorded her second assist of the game on the tally. Mary Kate Towne also had an assist on the goal, which was Stewart's first goal since transferring to UNCG from Southeastern Louisiana.
“We responded well today after not playing real well the other night in Charleston,” said UNCG coach Eddie Radwanski. “We got good contributions all around this afternoon, especially from Jessie Jay, Emilie Stewart, Megan Kepley and Amanda Zimmerman. This isn't an easy place to play and it is always important to win on the road in conference play.”
The Spartans will finish off their three-game road stretch on Thursday when they visit backyard-rival Elon at 4 p.m.
