UNCG - Duke Box Score
DURHAM, NC – Shelden Williams scored 15 of his 16 points in the first half to lead six Blue Devils in double-figures as Duke rolled past UNC Greensboro, 98-44, in non-conference men's basketball action at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday night.
The Spartans (2-1) dug themselves a hole in the first half, committing 14 turnovers. UNCG trailed 9-6 four minutes into the game before the Blue Devils (3-0) ran off 12 straight points to open up a 21-6 lead. The Spartans would get no closer to Duke, which is ranked No. 9 in the Associated Press Top 25 and No. 10 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Top 25.
“In the second half, I thought we played better,” said UNCG head coach Fran McCaffery. “I thought our young kids performed well for us tonight and it was good experience for them.
“The most impressive thing about Duke's performance is how they got after us, pretty much took us out of what we wanted to do. You really have to pick your poison with a team like Duke. We obviously have match-up problems with them in the post. And with the way they can really spread you out can put pressure on your perimeter. However, we were more concerned coming in with their post than their perimeter. Then, you have to execute your offense and not turn the ball over, and we didn't do either.”
Freshman forward Kyle Hines led UNCG with nine points and seven rebounds. Hines, a native of Sicklerville, NJ, also had two blocks and three steals. Of UNCG's 44 points, 30 came in the paint.
The Spartans' turnover woes were compounded by sporadic shooting. UNCG shot just 29.5 percent from the field (18-for-61) and 8-for-16 from the free throw line. UNCG failed to make a three-point attempt (0-for-5) for the first time in its Division I era (376 games since 1991-92) and overall for the first time since February 5, 1990, a span of 408 games.
Meanwhile, Duke connected on 52.9 percent of its shots from the field, including 15 three-pointers. The Blue Devils hit nine three-pointers in the first half when they opened up a 60-21 cushion at the intermission.
With the win, Duke is now 124-8 in non-conference home games at Cameron under Mike Krzyzewski. The Blue Devils have also won 99 of their last 104 overall at home.
UNCG will return home to face Bridgewater (VA) College on Tuesday night. Tip-off at Fleming Gymnasium is set for 7 pm.
