CHARLESTON, SC – Stanley Jackson scored a career-high 26 points and Bernard Jackson added 19 points to lead College of Charleston to a 79-67 win over UNC Greensboro in men's basketball action Monday night at Kresse Arena.
Ronnie Burrell led UNCG (12-6, 5-2) with 23 points and 10 rebounds, his fifth-straight double-digit scoring effort and 11th in the last 12 games. It was also the 12th 20-point game and the 13th double-double of his career, including six double-doubles this season, for the senior from Montclair, NJ.
Freshman Kyle Hines also added 13 points for UNCG.
The loss kept UNCG winless all-time at Kresse Arena. UNCG is now 0-7 all-time at Kresse. College of Charleston improved to 47-4 all-time against SoCon opponents at Kresse.
“We did a better job of keeping them off of the offensive boards in the second half,” said UNCG coach Fran McCaffery. “I was really proud of the way that our kids battled. We fought hard and the effort was there. However, we had some mental breakdowns and that hurt us. We played hard enough to win tonight, but we made mistakes that really cost us.”
For the fifth straight road game, the Spartans sputtered out of the gate. College of Charleston jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the game's first two minutes, causing McCaffery to call an early timeout.
College of Charleston went cold and the Spartans settled down after the timeout. UNCG rallied to take the lead with a 25-8 run. The Spartans tied the game, 13-13, on a jumper by Burrell and took their first lead of the night at the 11:32 mark on a conventional three-point play by Dustin Everette.
The UNCG lead reached double-digits when Burrell converted a conventional three-point play of his own to make it 28-16 with seven minutes left in the first half.
But the Cougars got back in it with a 14-3 run to close within a point, 31-30, jumpstarted by back-to-back dunks by Stanley Jackson.
The teams battled back and forth over the final two minutes of the first half before Bernard Jackson's two free throws with 17.4 seconds left gave College of Charleston the lead again, 36-35, a slim advantage it took into the locker room.
The teams picked up right where they left off at the start the second half, see-sawing back and forth. Neither team could open up a lead of more than three points until Robert Swain's three-pointer from the right corner gave College of Charleston a six-point advantage, 52-46, with 11:03 to play. The Spartans got to within three points a couple of times, but the Cougars opened up a 10-point lead on Stanley Jackson's tip-in with 5:51 to play, 63-53.
The Spartans battled back one more time. UNCG got back to within 67-61 on Ray Bristow's three-pointer from the left wing with 4:10 to play. Hines followed with two free throws with 3:35 to play to cut it to four. But that was as close as they would get as College of Charleston made 8-of-9 at the foul line in the final two minutes to put the game away.
The Spartans return home for three of their next four games beginning Saturday when they host Chattanooga at Saturday beginning at 7 pm.
