Furman rallies for four goals to down UNCG 4-3

GREENVILLE, SC – UNC Greensboro scored the first three goals of the contest only to see Furman net four unanswered goals to claim a 4-3 double overtime victory Sunday afternoon at Eugene Stone III Stadium.

Senior Amy Carnell put the Spartans (10-6-1, 6-3-1 SoCon) on the board first in the 19th minute as the reigning SoCon Player of the Year netted her fifth goal of the season. After an unsuccessful shot from teammate Dacia Beachum, Carnell corralled the loose ball at the left post and beat Furman keeper Andie Hinshaw, giving the Spartans an early 1-0 advantage.

The Spartans claimed a 2-0 lead in the 27th minute off a Karla Davis corner kick. Davis sent a service into the Paladin box where Carnell fired a header that ricocheted of the crossbar and back into the field of play. Much like the first goal, Deven Beachum controlled the loose rebound and notched her fourth goal of the season. The goal was Carnell's ninth assist of the season and her team-leading 19th point of the year.

Davis was part of UNCG's second consecutive goal as the Monroe, NC product tallied the game's third goal just over five minutes into the second half. The reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year collected her third goal off the season off a free kick just outside the Paladin box, blasting a left-footed shot that curled around the Furman wall and into the side netting of the Lady Paladin net.

Furman (12-5-2, 7-1-2 SoCon) cut into the Spartans lead in the 64th minute as Katharine Kelly converted on a Lady Paladin penalty kick, leaving the score a 3-1. The Lady Paladins added a second goal in the 72nd minute when Andre'a Morrison scored her 14th goal of the season off a through ball sent into the Spartan box by Kelly. Morrison struck again for the game-tying goal with less than four minutes left in regulation. Emily Krankowski sent a cross into the UNCG box where Morrison tied the contest at 3-3 with a header to beat UNCG keeper Jennifer Stillman.

After a scoreless first overtime session in which a total of just two shots were taken, the Lady Paladins scored the golden goal in second extra session in the 104th minute as Furman was awarded a penalty kick following a UNCG foul inside the box. Tara Maker took the kick and beat Stillman with a shot to the left side to give the Lady Paladins a 4-3 victory.

UNCG returns to the field next week when the Spartans take part in the 2005 SoCon Tournament hosted by Furman. Combined with Davidson's 2-1 win at Western Carolina Sunday afternoon, the Spartans enter next week's SoCon Tournament as the No. 3 seed with a total of 19 points. The Spartans will face sixth seeded Chattanooga Thursday evening at 5 pm in the tournament's third game of the day.
