UNCG Baseball Falls 9-5 to George Mason on Day One of the Hughes Brothers Baseball Challenge

Jeremy Roulin had two hits for the Spartans

WILMINGTON, NC -- Robby Jacobsen and Tyler Youngs had three hits each as George Mason defeated UNC Greensboro, 9-5, in game one of the Hughes Brothers Baseball Challenge at Brooks Field in Wilmington, NC. George Mason improved to 2-2 on the season while UNCG dropped to 4-1.

 

Stacen Gant (2-0) picked up the win for the Patriots hurling 5 2/3 innings giving up five hits and one earned run. Phil Stone recorded his first save of the season. Chris Mason (1-1) suffered the loss for the Spartans.

 

Jeremy Roulin went 2-for-5 with three RBI, while Mason went 2-for-4 with an RBI to pace the Spartan attack.

 

George Mason jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on Youngs' RBI single. UNCG answered in the bottom half of the frame as the Spartans capitalized on two walks and a George Mason error to take a 2-1 lead on a two-out single by Roulin that plated Jon Denote and Adam Deleo who both walked.

 

The Patriots tied the game up at 2-2 in the fourth inning on Youngs' second straight RBI single to left field. UNCG quickly re-took the lead in the bottom half of the stanza on Roulin's double to center.

 

The Patriots captured the lead for good with four runs in the top of the fifth on three hits. The inning was highlighted by an RBI double by Chris Fournier and a run scoring single by Chris Looze.

 

The Spartans to return to action on Saturday at 7 p.m. against James Madison in day two of the Hughes Brothers Baseball Challenge in Wilmington.
