Five Run Fifth Inning Propels UNC Wilmington Past UNCG, 9-3

WILMINGTON, NC--  UNC Wilmington broke away from a 2-2 tie with a five-run fourth inning as the Seahawks defeated UNC Greensboro, 9-3, in game nine of the Hughes Brothers Baseball Challenge at Brooks Field in Wilmington, NC. The game was called in the bottom of the eighth inning due to rain.

 

UNCW, who ended a three-game losing streak, improved to 6-7 overall, while the Spartans dropped to 5-2.

 

Jonathan Batts went 3-for-4, including a two-run home run that highlighted the Seahawk fourth inning. Tim Preston also posted three hits for the Seahawks. Justin Crist and Adam Deleo had two hits each to pace the Spartan attack. Crist, along with Jeremy Roulin, and David Adams drove in runs for the Spartans.

 

UNCW right-hander Zach Booker (2-0) tossed 5 1/3 of relief to pick up the win. Nick Starnes (1-1) got the loss for the Spartans.

 

The Spartans will travel to Raleigh on Tuesday, March 1 to take on N.C. State. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
