RALEIGH, NC-- N.C. State scored six runs in the third inning and four in the sixth en-route to a 11-1 win over UNC Greensboro in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at a chilly Doak Field in Raleigh.
N.C. State (10-2) provided pitcher Gib Hobson all the support he needed with a six-run third inning, taking advantage of five hits, two walks and a wild pitch. A run scoring double by Aaron Bates highlighted the inning for the Wolfpack who sent 10 batters to the plate.
The Wolfpack scored four times in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 10-1. Bates capped off the inning with a bases clearing double to right field.
The Spartans(5-3) took an early 1-0 lead in the second on a two-out single to center by David Adams that scored Chris Mason, who led off the inning with a double. With his leadoff double in the inning, Mason extended his hitting streak to eight games.
Bates went 2-for-4 with 4 runs batted in, while Chris Engle went 3-for-5 with one RBI. Brian Aragon and Ramon Corona also added a pair of hits.
Hobson (3-0) allowed one run in five innings of work to pick up the win. Patrick Currin (0-1) suffered the loss.
The Spartans return home for an eight-game homestand beginning this weekend with a three-game weekend series against Ohio University. The series begins on Friday, March 4 at 6 p.m.
