GREENSBORO, NC – Junior pitcher Chris Mason (3-1) tossed a complete game, allowing three hits, while striking out a career-high 12 batters as the UNC Greensboro baseball team (9-5, 1-0 SoCon) opened up Southern Conference play with a 2-1 win over The Citadel on Friday evening at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Mason, the product of Cherryville, NC, also had a team-high two hits and reached base on a walk. Tripp Cappelman led the Bulldog attack with two hits. Cappelman, along with Trent Weathers, were the only Bulldog batters to record a hit.
Ryan Owens (2-1) got the loss for The Citadel (7-6, 0-1 SoCon) despite striking out a career-high nine batters. The junior left-hander walked five and allowed only four hits.
After giving up an unearned run in the first inning, the Spartans answered with a pair of runs in the second stanza. With the bases loaded and no outs, freshman Adam Deleo drove in the game-tying run on a sacrifice-fly to right that scored Jay Maule who walked to lead off the inning. The next hitter, Mike Mongiello plated the go-ahead run on a grounder to second that scored David Adams who reached base on a walk.
Game two of this three-game series is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
