GREENSBORO, NC – UNC Greensboro freshman Roly Gonzalez went 2-for-5 with three RBI, including the game-winner in the sixth inning, as UNCG (11-5, 3-0 SoCon) defeated The Citadel, 5-4 in Southern Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. With the win, the Spartans swept the three-game conference series from the Bulldogs for the first time since the 1998 season.
Gonzalez, the native of Miami, FL, drove in the game-winner with two outs in the sixth on a double to right center.
Nick Starnes (3-1) and Wes McCall combined on a three-hitter. Starnes, the sophomore from Haw River, NC tossed 7-1/3 innings, striking out eight batters, while McCall recorded his third save of the season. Ken Egleton (0-2) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs. The junior right-hander allowed four earned runs in six innings of work.
Chris Mason also added three hits to the Spartan attack that recorded 11 on the day. For the three-game series, UNCG out-hit the Bulldogs, 32-14.
Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, the Spartans posted three runs to take a 3-1 lead. All three runs scored came with two outs. Jeremy Roulin brought in the first run on a base loaded walk, while Gonzalez drove in a pair on a single to right field.
The Citadel (7-8, 0-3 SoCon) tied the game up at 3-3 with a run in both the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth, Josh Stackley drove in a run on a single to center that scored Matt Matulia who led off the inning with a walk. In the fifth, Chris Ard reached based on catcher's interference, stole second, then scored two batters later on Trent Weathers' grounder to second.
UNCG next travels to Williamsburg, VA to take on William & Mary on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Next up for the Bulldogs is a three-game series with SoCon foe Elon beginning on Friday, March 18 at 6 p.m. at Riley Park.
