GREENSBORO, NC –Senior Jay Maule went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a two-run home run as the UNC Greensboro baseball team defeated Ohio University, 8-6, in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
UNCG (7-4) broke a 5-5 deadlock in the fifth inning with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Mike Mongiello plated the go-ahead run on a single to right center that scored Maule who doubled to lead off the inning. The second Spartan run came two batters later when Danny McClure scored on a wild pitch. Mongiello scored the final run of the stanza on a sacrifice-fly by Jeremy Roulin.
McClure and Justin Crist also added two hits to the Spartan attack that posted 11 on the day. Anthony Gressick went 3-for-4, while Willie Walker had two hits for Ohio. Brian Colopy and Phil Sabatini added solo home runs in the fourth and eighth innings respectively for the Bobcats (3-6).
Nick Starnes (2-1) got the win for UNCG, allowing five runs on six hits, while striking out five batters. Wes McCall recorded his first career save. The left-hander from Gastonia, NC, went the final three innings and allowed one run. Yale Silverman (0-2) suffered the loss for the Bobcats.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday, March 8 at home against N.C. State. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. Ohio hosts LeMoyne for a three-game weekend series starting on Friday at 6 p.m.
