GREENVILLE, SC –UNC Greensboro and Furman split a Southern Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Furman Baseball Stadium. The Paladins won the opener, 5-3, while the Spartans took the nightcap, 5-2.

With the doubleheader split, UNCG is 16-9 overall, 7-4 in the SoCon, while Furman is 10-15, 4-6 in league play.

In game one, the Spartans got on the board quickly when lead-off hitter Jeremy Roulin homered to left center field. The home run for Roulin was his first of the season.

Furman took a 2-1 lead after two innings on a two-run home by second baseman Joe Daysh.

Justin Crist tied the game up at 2-2 in the fourth inning when he scored on a single by Jake Linney.

The Paladins re-took the lead for good in the seventh on a three-run home run by left fielder Will Stembridge.

The Spartans added a run in the ninth on a solo home run by pitcher Chris Mason.

Sam Perry (2-3) tossed a six-hit complete game to pick up the win for Furman. Mason (4-3) struck out 12 batters, allowing five hits and four earned runs to suffer the loss for the Spartans.

In game two, Furman opened up a 1-0 lead in the second when Daysh doubled in Sam McLain from second base.

UNCG answered with a run of its own in the third on a run scoring single by Mason. Â The Spartans pushed across a pair of runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Linney drove in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly that brought in Mike Mongiello, while Mason added the second run on his second home run on the day.

Greg Feltes increased the Spartan lead to 4-1 with a lead-off home run in the eighth inning. UNCG pushed the lead up to 5-1 in the ninth when Roulin drove in Sean Snell from third on a sacrifice fly.

Sophomore Nick Starnes tossed seven strong innings, allowing five hits and one earned run to get the win. Starnes, the right-hander from Haw River, NC, fanned five batters to improve to 4-2 on the season. Freshman Wes McCall went the final two innings to record his fifth save of the season. Kyle Funk (0-2) got the loss for Furman.

The rubber game of the three-game series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Furman Baseball Stadium. Â
