Spartan Baseball Falls at Elon, 8-4

ELON, NC- The UNC Greensboro baseball team lost its third straight game as the Spartans fell to Elon, 8-4, in the final game of a three-game Southern Conference series Sunday afternoon at Latham Park.

 

Elon opened up a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run home run by catcher Matt Stocco.

 

The Phoenix scored an unearned run in the third inning to make the score 3-0. Gary Morris reached base on a fielding error by the UNCG third baseman, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Morris scored on a grounder to second by Chris Price.

 

UNCG got on the board in the fourth inning when Adam Deleo brought in David Adams on a grounder to second.

 

Adam Weaver gave Elon a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning on a double down the left field line that plated Matt Hill who reached on a fielding error by the shortstop.

 

UNCG narrowed the Phoenix lead to 4-3 with two runs in the top of the sixth. Adams led off with a double then scored on a single by Danny McClure. McClure scored three batters later on a grounder to third by Greg Feltes.

 

Chris Mason tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh inning on a solo home run to left center.

 

Elon took the lead for good with four runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Evan Erickson capped off the inning with a bases clearing double off the top of the center field wall.

 

Kevin Regan got the win in relief for Elon to improve to 3-1 on the season. Mason, despite recording his fourth complete game of the season, suffered the loss. The junior right-hander from Cherryville, NC allowed eight runs (two earned) on seven hits. He struckout 11 batters on the game and now has 105 on the season, eight shy of the single season record held by Ryan Gordon in 2000.

 

At the plate, Mason tied his career-high with four hits on the game. Adams, along with McClure and Mike Mongiello added two hits apiece.  

 

UNCG returns to action on Wednesday against Wake Forest. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. Elon travels to Clemson to take on the Tigers on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
