GREENSBORO, NC – The UNC Greensboro baseball team dropped its fourth consecutive game, as the Spartans fell to Wake Forest, 4-2, in a non-conference game Wednesday night at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Sophomore right-hander Josh Ellis (5-4) tossed six scoreless innings as the Demon Deacons improve to 21-23 on the season. Kyle Young pitched a scoreless ninth to record his sixth save of the season. Wes McCall (4-2), making his first collegiate start on the mound, suffered the loss for UNCG who falls to 23-15 on the year.
Wake Forest opened up a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Matt Antonelli opened the game with a double then scored on a one-out single by J.B. Tucker.
Tucker increased the Deacon lead to 2-0 in the third when he doubled in Ben Ingold from second.
Grant Achillies gave the Demon Deacons a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning when he singled in Matt Miller from third. Wake pushed across another run on Brett Linnenkohl's grounder to first.
UNCG got on the board in the eighth inning with a pair of runs. Jake Linney walked with one out then scored on Chris Mason's triple down the right field line. Mason scored one batter later on a grounder to second by Justin Crist.
Tucker went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, while Casey Sterk went 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Demon Deacons. For the Spartans, Mason and Crist both went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
UNCG returns to the field for a three-game Southern Conference series against Western Carolina. The series begins on Friday at 7 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday's games are at 1 p.m. at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
