GREENSBORO, NC – Jared Greenwood's two-run home run in the first inning proved to be enough, as Western Carolina defeated UNC Greensboro, 3-1, in Southern Conference action Friday night at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
The win ended an eight-game losing streak to the Spartans that dated back to the 2002 season.
Junior Brian McCullen went a career-best eight innings, allowing one run on six hits to improve to 4-2 on the season. Clint Ramsey tossed a scoreless ninth inning to record his fourth save of the season. Chris Mason (4-5) got the loss for the Spartans. Mason, the junior right-hander from Cherryville, NC went the distance for the fifth time this season, allowing three runs on eight hits. He fanned seven batters on the night and now has 112 on the year. Mason is two strikeouts away from breaking the single season school record of 113, held by Ryan Gordon in the 2000 season.
UNCG (23-16, 10-9 SoCon) got on the board in the third inning on Jake Linney's single to center that brought in Jon Denote.
The Catamounts (23-18, 11-11 SoCon) added an insurance run in the fifth inning on a double down the left field line by Barrett Shaft that scored Brandon Zollman all the way from first base.
Zollman and Steven Strausburgh each had two hits to lead the Catamounts at the plate. Jeremy Roulin paced the Spartans with two hits.
Game two of the three-game weekend set is slated for Saturday at 1 pm at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
