Jay Maule drove in a season-high five runs in Sunday's win over Furman |
GREENVILLE, SC – Senior Jay Maule belted a three-run home run in the fourth inning and drove in a season-high five runs to pace UNC Greensboro to an 11-2 victory and series win over Furman in Southern Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Furman Stadium.
With UNCG leading 7-1 in the fourth inning, Maule, took a one-out pitch from Paladin reliever Matt Klinker over the left field fence to stretch the Spartans' lead to 10-1. Maule, the native of Southington, CT, now has a team-high four home runs on the season. He went 2-for-3 in the contest, including an RBI single in the first inning and sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Adam Krieger (1-1) pitched 5- 2/3 innings to earn the victory. Krieger, the right-hander from Clearwater, FL, allowed six hits, two earned runs, and two walks while striking out four. Furman starter Ryan Hodinka (3-3) took the loss for the Paladins. He gave up five hits, five earned runs, and two walks and did not record a strikeout.
UNCG (17-9, 8-4 SoCon) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first after Chris Mason was hit by a pitch with two outs, advanced to second on a walk to Justin Crist, and came home on Maule's single to left field.
Furman (10-16, 4-7 SoCon) knotted the game in the bottom of the frame after Andrew Greene singled with one out and later scored on a balk by Krieger.
UNCG took control in the second, combining four hits, a walk, and a Furman error to score five runs to take a 6-1 lead.
The Spartans added a run in the sixth inning on a solo home run to center by Crist.
UNCG travels to High Point for a 3 p.m. contest on Tuesday.
