Trey McDaniel's Three-Run Blast Lifts Western Carolina Past UNCG, 8-7

GREENSBORO, NC Trey McDaniel hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning as Western Carolina came-from-behind to defeat UNC Greensboro, 8-7, in Southern Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

 

McDaniel, the sophomore transfer, went 2-for-5 on the afternoon and drove in a game-high four runs. Nate Hall, along with Blake Murphy also added a pair of hits for the Catamounts.

 

McDaniel gave Western Carolina a 1-0 lead in the opening frame on an infield single to the shortstop that brought in Jared Greenwood from second base.

 

Hall gave the Catamounts (24-18, 12-11 SoCon) a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth on a double in the gap to left center field that plated Chris Davis from first.

 

UNCG (23-17, 10-10 SoCon) took the lead with four runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Chris Mason led off the inning with a home run to center field. Justin Crist followed that up with a single to left then scored on Mike Mongiello's two-run single to center. Mongiello came around to score one batter later on a single up the left side by Sean Snell.

 

Steven Strausbaugh helped Western Carolina re-take the lead at 5-4 in the top of the fifth on a three-run home run to left field.

 

Jay Maule gave the Spartans an 7-5 lead in the bottom half of the fifth on a three-run home run to left center. The blast for Maule was his team-high fifth of the season and 21st of his career.

 

Luke Miller got the win in relief to improve to 4-2 on the season. Miller, the junior right-hander from Burnsville, NC, allowed no runs on one hit in 3.2 innings of work. Clint Ramsey tossed a scoreless ninth inning to record his fifth save of the season. Freshman left-hander Wes McCall (4-3) got the loss for the Spartans in relief.

 

Mason and Mongiello had a pair of hits for the Spartans who have lost six straight.

 

The final game of the weekend series is set for Sunday at 1 pm at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
