Clay Gibson improves to 3-0 on the season |
GREENSBORO, NC— Freshman Clay Gibson tossed four innings of scoreless relief as the UNC Greensboro baseball team defeated Western Carolina, 6-5, to snap a six-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Gibson, the left-hander from Gastonia, NC, fanned three batters to improve his record to 3-0 on the season. Derrick Hawk allowed two earned runs on four hits in 2.2 innings of middle relief to suffer the loss.
In the third inning, Greg Feltes tripled to right center with one out then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeremy Roulin to give UNCG a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans (24-17, 11-10 SoCon) scored three times in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score, 4-0. Mike Mongiello bought in the first run on a single to center that scored Jay Maule., while Adam Deleo drove in a pair on a double to right.
Western Carolina cut the Spartan lead to 4-3 in the fifth inning. Trey McDaniel singled with one out, advanced to third on a single by Chris Davis then scored on Brandon Zollman's single to left field. The Catamounts scored two more when Jonathan Greene reached base on a fielding error by the UNCG left fielder.
Maule gave UNCG a 5-3 lead in the bottom half of the fifth on a solo home run to left field.
Western tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Tim Hallem opened the inning with a single then scored one batter later on Jared Greenwood's double. Greenwood scored the game-tying run on a two-out single by Nate Hall.
The Spartans scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a fielder's choice by Jeremy Roulin.
Deleo went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in to pace the Spartans. Zollman led the Catamounts with two hits and one RBI.
UNCG, who will take off the week for final exams, return to action for a three-game SoCon series at Wofford beginning on Friday, May 6 at 6 pm.
