GREENSBORO, NC – Freshman catcher Adam Deleo went 3-for-3 with four RBI as the UNCG baseball team defeated Appalachian State, 6-3 in Southern Conference action Friday night at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The win for the Spartans was their sixth straight.

Sophomore Nick Starnes went six innings, allowing three runs on nine hits to improve to 6-4 on the season. The right-hander from Haw River, NC, fanned eight batters on the night while issuing only one walk. Wes McCall tossed three innings of no-hit relief to record his team-high sixth save of the season. The left-hander from Gastonia, NC, struck out five of the nine batters that he faced. Chad Antley got the loss for Appalachian State. The junior left-hander went the distance, allowing six runs (four earned) on ten hits to fall to 1-2 on the season.   

UNCG (29-17, 15-10 SoCon) opened up a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Deleo drove in two runs on a double to left field that scored Justin Crist and Jay Maule. Deleo then scored one batter on later on Mike Mongiello's single to left field. The next batter, Jeremy Roulin plated Mongiello on a double in the gap in left center.

The Spartans increased the lead to 6-0 in the third inning on a two run single to left by Deleo.

Appalachian State (10-37, 5-19 SoCon) got on the board with two runs in the fourth inning.  Brad Peisel reached on a lead off walk then scored on a double by Kevin Butler. Two batters later, Butler scored on a double by Jimmy Mathias.

The Mountaineers cut the Spartan lead to 6-3 in the sixth on an RBI-single by Brooks Haislip.

Game two of the three-game weekend series is set for Saturday at 1 pm.
