MOUNT PLEASANT, SC— College of Charleston's Brett Anderson went 4-for-4 with two runs scored, while starting pitcher Ryan Edell (6-2) allowed five hits in eight innings, as the 20th-ranked Cougars defeated UNC Greensboro, 9-1 in Southern Conference baseball action Thursday night at Patriots Point Field. The loss snapped UNCG's eight-game winning streak.
College of Charleston (42-11, 25-3 SoCon) scored the game's opening run in the bottom of the third. Brett Gardner and Phillip Coker both walked then advanced on a passed ball. Byron Barber was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Chris Campbell brought in the lone run in the inning on a grounder to the pitcher.
Oliver Marmol gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to center that plated Anderson who doubled to lead off the fourth inning.
A four-run fifth inning gave College of Charleston a 6-0 lead. With one out, D.J. Wabick hit a solo home run over the left field wall. Brian Hastings drove in two more a double in the gap in left center, driving in Brett Anderson and Jess Easterling. Hastings scored two batters on a fielder's choice.
UNCG (31-18, 17-11SoCon) got on the board in the top of the sixth inning to make the score 6-1. Jeremy Roulin led the inning off with a double to left center then scored two batters later on a grounder to the second base by Chris Mason.
Nick Starnes (6-5) suffered the loss for UNCG. The right-hander from Haw River, NC, allowed six runs (six earned) in 4.1 innings of work. He also walked seven batters.
Freshman Mike Mongiello tied a career-high with three hits to pace the Spartans.
Game two of the three game series is slated for 6 pm on Friday.
