College of Charleston Sweeps SoCon Doubleheader from Spartans

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC— The UNC Greensboro lost both games of a Southern Conference doubleheader to 20th-ranked College of Charleston Saturday at Patriots Point Field. College of Charleston defeated the Spartans, 7-2 in game one, while the Cougars took the nightcap, 8-0.

 

In game one, UNCG opened the game with an unearned run in the top of the first. Jeremy Roulin led the game off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt then scored two batters later on a fielding error by the shortstop. The Cougars answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Brett Gardner led off with a single then moved over on a walk to Phillip Coker. Both men came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Chris Campbell and a single by D.J. Wabick.

 

College of Charleston added three in the bottom half of the third to take a 5-1 lead. Brian Hastings plated the first run on Oliver Marmol's double to left field. Two batters later, Coker knocked in two more on a single to right.

 

UNCG got a run in the top of the fourth on a bases loaded walk to Roulin.

 

The Cougars added an unearned run in the sixth when Jess Easterling scored from second on a fielding error by the second baseman.

 

Reid Price got the win for the Cougars. The left-hander allowed two runs (one earned) in 6.2 innings to improve to 6-1 on the season. Despite suffering the loss in the opener, Mason (6-6) tossed his school-record tenth complete game. He now has pitched ina 110.2 innings this season, a new single season mark. The previous record of 106.1 innings was held by Jay Metzger (2002).

 

In the nightcap, College of Charleston jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the opening frame. The Cougars got the first two men on base. Gardner led off with a double, while Coker reached on a bunt. Gardner scored the first run on a fielder's choice. Coker stole second and scored on a double by Wabick. One batter later, Easterling singled in Wabick from second.

 

The Cougars scored a pair in the third to push the lead up to 5-0. Coker walked then scored on a fielding error by the Spartan pitcher. One batter later, Campbell drove in Coker from third with a single.

 

CofC added two insurance runs in the sixth to raise the lead to 7-0. Both runs came across on a single to center by Barber.

 

Danny Meszaros (6-0) went 3.1 innings of middle relief to pick up the victory. The right-hander allowed no runs one hit. Adam Krieger (4-2) suffered the loss for the Spartans.

 

College of Charleston wrapped up the regular season with a 44-11 overall record, 27-3 in the SoCon, while the Spartans fall to 31-20, 17-13 in league play. The Spartans will be the fifth seed in the Southern Conference Baseball Tournament that begins Wednesday at Riley Park in Charleston.
