UNCG Falls to Elon in Game One of Southern Conference Baseball Tournament, 12-6

CHARLESTON, SC – Elon used a six-run eighth inning as the Phoenix defeated UNC Greensboro, 12-6 in game one of the 2005 Pepsi-Cola/Wendy's Southern Conference Baseball Tournament held at Riley Park in Charleston.

 

The fourth-seeded Phoenix, advance to the winner's bracket to take on the winner of the College of Charleston/Furman game at 4 pm on Thursday, while the fifth-seeded Spartans will take on the loser of the CofC/Furman at 10 am.

 

Gary Morris started the scoring off in the six-run eighth inning with a double to left that plated Matt Hill. After an intentional walk to Paul Bennett to load the bases, Chris Price drove in a pair with a single to left. The next batter, Evan Erickson brought in two more on a double off the wall in left center field. Erickson scored two batters later on Matt Link's triple to center.

 

UNCG (31-21) opened up a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jeremy Roulin scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Jay Maule.

 

Elon (32-23) tied it in the bottom of the first when Erickson scored on a sacrifice fly to center.

 

The Phoenix added two in the third to take a 3-1 lead on a run scoring single by Bennett and a RBI-double by Erickson.

 

The Spartans used a five-run fifth inning to take a 6-3 lead. Roulin knocked in the first run on a double down the left field line that scored Adam Deleo from third. Two batters later with the bases loaded, Chris Mason smacked a home run over the scoreboard in left field. The home run for Mason was his seventh of the season.

 

After a solo home run by Drew Davis in the sixth inning, Elon tied it in the seventh with two runs. The first came on a sacrifice fly by Erickson, while the second came one batter later on a single up the middle by Davis.

 

Kevin Regan got the win in relief for Elon. The right-hander pitched two innings of scoreless relief to improve to 5-1 on the season. Patrick Currin suffered the loss for the Spartans who have now lost four straight in the SoCon Tournament. The right-hander form Chapel Hill, NC falls to 5-4 on the year.

 

Roulin went 4-for-5 at the plate, while Mason added two hits and four RBI. Erickson had three hits to lead the Phoenix.
