Chris Mason improves to 5-5 on the season |
SPARTANBURG, SC— Chris Mason (5-5) tossed a complete game shutout, as the Spartans tied a season-high with 17 hits en route to a 14-0 victory over in Southern Conference action Friday night at Russell C. King Field.
Mason, the junior from Cherryville, NC, fanned seven batters to break UNCG's single season strikeout record of 113, held by Ryan Gordon in 2000. Mason also recorded his sixth complete game of the season which ties Jay Metzger (2002) for the most in a season.
Jesse Cole (2-5) got the loss for Wofford who falls to 17-31, 7-18 in the SoCon.
UNCG (25-17, 12-10 SoCon) opened up a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo home run to right field by Jake Linney.
The Spartans put away the Terriers with a six-run eighth to push the lead up to 7-0. Mason led of the inning with a double, advanced to third on a single by Justin Crist then scored when Jay Maule reached base on a fielding error by the Wofford shortstop. Mike Mongiello drove in Crist and Maule on a single to center. Adam Deleo followed that up with a double to right that plated David Adams. Mongiello scored the next run on a passed ball while Jeremy Roulin drove in the Deleo with the inning's final run.
UNCG scored seven runs on six hits in the ninth inning as the Spartans tied a season-high with 14 runs. The Spartans scored 14 runs in the win over The Citadel on March 12. Roulin highlighted the ninth inning with a two-run double to right field.
Deleo went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Roulin, Mason, Adams and Mongiello had two hits apiece.
Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for Saturday at 1 pm.
