Four Run Ninth Lifts Spartans Past Wofford, 6-5

Adam Deleo went 3-for-4 with three runs scored to pace the Spartans

SPARTANBURG, SC— Junior Jake Linney capped off a four-run ninth with a two-run single to right as the UNC Greensboro baseball team came-from-behind to defeat Wofford, 6-5, in Southern Conference action Saturday afternoon at Russell C. King Field.

 

Trailing 5-2 entering the ninth inning, the Spartans got the lead off batter on when Danny McClure reached on a walk. Two batters later, Mike Mongiello advanced McClure to second on a single to left. Adam Deleo then loaded the bases with a single off the top of the left field wall. Jon Denote brought in McClure with the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to right. Jeremy Roulin followed that up with a double to left that plated Mongiello, setting up Linney who was hitless on the game entering the at-bat.

 

Patrick Currin tossed two innings of scoreless the relief to improve his record to 5-3 on the season. The junior right-hander from Chapel Hill, NC, fanned two batters to help the Spartans win their third in a row. Andrew Hewitt, who allowed six runs on ten hits in 8.2 innings pitched, suffered the loss for Wofford. The junior right-hander falls to 4-6 on the year.

 

Deleo paced the Spartan offense with three hits. The freshman catcher from Wilmington, NC, also scored a game-high three runs. Roulin and Mongiello, along with Jay Maule had two hits each as the Spartans posted 11 on the day. Linney and Chris Mason drove in a team-high two runs.

 

UNCG (26-17, 13-10 SoCon) got on the board in the top of the third when Deleo scored from third on an infield single by Mason.

 

Wofford (17-32, 7-19 SoCon) took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a two-run home run by Shane Kirkley. It was the seventh home run of the season for the freshman third baseman.

 

The Spartans tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth. Deleo led off with a single, advanced two third, two batters later on a double by Roulin then scored on a sacrifice fly by Mason.

 

Brandon Waring gave the Terriers a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run home run to left center. The blast for Waring was his team-high tenth of the season.   

 

The final game of the weekend series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 pm.
