Freshman Wes McCall improves to 5-3 on the season |
SPARTANBURG, SC— Junior Chris Mason went 3-for-5 with two home runs, while freshman Mike Mongiello added three hits as the UNC Greensboro baseball team completed the series sweep of Wofford with a 9-5 victory over the Terriers in Southern Conference action Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field.
Freshman Wes McCall went a career-long five innings in relief to improve his record to 5-3 on the season. McCall, the left-hander from Gastonia, NC fanned four batters and allowed one earned run as the Spartans captured their fourth straight victory. Austin Redwine (8-6) got the loss for Wofford. The right-hander from Ocean Isle Beach, NC, allowed six earned runs in seven innings of work.
For the third straight game, UNCG scored the game's first run. In the top of the third, Mongiello led off with a double then scored two batters later on a double off the top of the wall by Logan Smith.
Wofford scored a pair in the bottom half of the third to take a 2-1 lead. With one out, Steven Johnson doubled to right and scored one batter later on a double by Scott Holloway. Holloway advanced to third on a single by Anthony DiNardo then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Ben Austin.
Brandon Waring gave Wofford a 3-1 lead in the fourth on a double in the gap to left center scoring Adam Wood from first base. Waring plated the fourth Terrier run on John Brandt's single to center.
UNCG broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning. Mongiello led the inning off with a bunt then advanced to second on a one-out walk to Smith. Both came around to score on Jeremy Roulin's double to left center. Roulin tallied another when he scored off a grounder to second by Jake Linney. The Spartans added three runs off a solo home run by Mason and a two-run shot by David Adams.
The Spartans added an insurance run in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Adam Deleo.
After a Wofford run in the eight on a Bradford Eaves single, UNCG put one more on the board in the ninth on Mason's second home run of the game.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday against Guilford County rival High Point at 6 pm at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
