GREENSBORO, NC UNC Greensboro split a doubleheader with in-state rival Campbell Tuesday afternoon at UNCG Softball Stadium. The Spartans picked up a 6-1 victory in game one, before the Camels won game two by a score of 13-1.
Junior Jennifer Bonilla staked UNCG to an early lead with a two-run blast over the left-centerfield wall in the third inning.
Campbell got a run back with a run-scoring double by Jessica Huffman in the top half of the fifth, but the Spartans immediately struck back with three runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 5-1 lead. Freshman Lyndsay Mouse led-off the inning with a single and took second base on a fly out by Adriane Audley. Senior Krista Judge then reached on a bunt single and promptly stole second. On the steal attempt, Mouse scored from third when the catchers throw went into centerfield.
Later in the inning, Bonilla plated Judge on a sacrifice fly and senior Gwen Johnson laced a solo homer to left center to make it 5-1 in favor of the Spartans. Johnson, who was named the Southern Conference player of the week on Monday, connected for her team-leading eighth long ball of the young season.
Junior Heather Branche scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to round out the game's scoring.
Junior Vanessa Oakes pitched her second straight complete game victory to even her record at 4-4 on the season. She scattered eight hits over 7.0 innings and allowed one run and stuck out five.
Lauren Caviness (10-7) suffered the loss after giving up five runs on six hits over 4.2 innings of work. Lexi Myers came in with two outs in the fifth and gave up one run on two hits over 1.1 innings.
Mouse was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Judge was 2-for-4 with two runs. Bonilla was 1-for-2 with three RBIs and her first homer of the season. Meanwhile, Huffman was 2-for-4 to lead Campbell in game one.
In the nightcap, the Camels sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs to blow the game wide open in favor of the visitors in the third inning. Karlie Love's three-run double was the key hit for the Camels in the inning. Huffman added a two-run single in the frame.
Junior Kara Clouser came through with an RBI single up the middle for UNCG in the fifth to avoid the shutout. Clouser and senior Kelly Allen, who doubled to begin the fifth, accounted for the only two hits for UNCG.
Huffman and Love each had two hits and three RBI for Campbell, while Holly Harris and was 1-for-3 with two runs and a home run for the Camels
Kelly Weaver (8-4) allowed zero hits into the fifth and would up with the 5.0 inning victory. Hannah Angel (3-6) got the loss, as she gave up four runs on five hits in 2.1 innings of work.
