College of Charleston evens series with 5-0 win over UNCG

Box Score

GREENSBORO, NC Danny Meszaros stuck out a career-high 12 batters en route to his fourth win of the season as College of Charleston evened a three-game series with a 5-0 win over UNC Greensboro Saturday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Meszaros, who improved to 4-0 overall, threw a complete game shutout and limited the Spartans to just six hits while walking just one.  Wes McCall (1-4), who was also extremely effective on the hill, took the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out three in 6-2/3 innings on the mound.  Clinton McKinney finished the game for UNCG and allowed one run on two hits in 2-1/3 innings of work.

The Cougars (19-5, 4-1 SoCon) scored three runs in the top of the third to take an early advantage.  Phillip Coker hit a one out double and then stole third base before Chris Campbell plated him with a groundout to the right side.  After catcher Alex Garabedian walked, UNCG centerfielder Jermaine Mitchell misplayed a single from Jess Easterling, allowing Garabedian to score and Easterling to reach third.  Easterling then scored the final run of the inning on the next play as the Spartans committed an error on the infield that allowed Matt Kirkpatrick to reach first as well.

Campbell put the Cougars out in front 4-0 in the seventh inning after connecting for an RBI double to leftfield that score Oliver Marmol from second base.  Charleston added a final run in the ninth inning on an RBI groundout from Campbell.  Campbell finished the afternoon 2-for-5 and collected each of the Cougars' three RBI.

Only two of the Cougars' five runs were earned as the Spartans committed four errors that lead to three unearned runs.  Just one of the runs scored in the third inning was earned.

Sophomore second baseman Greg Feltes led the Spartans at the plate with a 3-for-4 showing on the afternoon.  Guy Welsh went 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to six games.

The two teams return to UNCG Baseball Stadium Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for the rubber match of a three-game series.
