GREENSBORO, NC The UNC Greensboro softball team picked up two non-conference wins by taking both ends of a doubleheader with North Carolina A&T at the Lady Aggie Softball Complex on Tuesday afternoon. UNCG took game one 4-0 and claimed the sweep with a 15-0 win in the late game.
UNCG (20-20) started the first game strong. Brittany Ausley hit a leadoff single in the first inning and moved to second base when Mary Greenway was out at first. Ausley, who advanced to third on a wild pitch, came home with an Adriane Audley RBI single to right field to give the Spartans the early 1-0 advantage.
The Spartans added to their lead in the top of the second inning when Lyndsay Mouse hit her third home run of the season. The Aggies were able to get two runners on base in the fourth inning but couldn't get any closer as they closed the inning with a ground out to second base and a fly out to left field.
UNCG pushed its lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning. Vanessa Oakes, who pinch ran for Emily Akiyama was plated on an error by Aggies centerfielder Chaola Simmons. The Spartans added another run in the seventh inning when Lyndsey Wilson hit a home run through right field.
Vanessa Oakes picked up the win for UNCG. She allowed no runs on one hit in 6.0 innings of work. Oakes had seven strikeouts and issued one walk.
Leadoff batter Brittany Ausley led the Spartans at the plate going 3-for-4 with one run scored. Audley, Mouse and Wilson each had one RBI.
In the late game the Spartans again jumped out to the early lead taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Greenway, who hit a single through right field and advanced on a stolen base, was plated when Whitney Sirois hit an RBI single.
UNCG stepped up and had a huge fourth inning by scoring four runs on four hits. Mouse started the inning with a leadoff single and then advanced to second on a passed ball. A&T pitcher Bianca Alsobrook walked Wilson and the Spartans had the bases loaded. Mouse was out at home but Wilson was plated on a passed ball on the next play.
Ausley, Greenway and Audley all scored in the inning to put the Spartans up 5-0. UNCG added two more runs in the third inning including a RBI triple from Brittany Ausley which allowed Whitney Miller to pick up her first collegiate run. The Spartans sealed their biggest victory of the season with a five run fifth inning.
Wilson led UNCG from the plate. She was 2-for-2 and had a game-high six RBI.
Amber Harrell earned the win by allowing no runs on two hits in 3.0 innings of work. Hannah Angel pitched 2.0 innings in relief and allowed one hit. Angel walked one and had five strikeouts.
The Spartans are next in action March 21-April 1 when they welcome Southern Conference rival Chattanooga to UNCG Softball game for a weekend series.
