CHARLESTON, SC College of Charleston's Nick Chigges allowed two runs on five hits and pitched his first complete game of the season to lead the 27th-ranked Cougars to the 6-2 victory over UNC Greensboro on Friday evening at Patriots Point Field.
Chigges struck out a game-high five batters and improved to perfect 10-0 on the season.
Senior Ryan Falcon (6-7) took the loss after allowing six runs on 11 hits in seven innings and struck out four batters.
College of Charleston (37-13, 18-4 SoCon) got on the board in the bottom of the second and took the one-run advantage when Jedd Cordisco sent a two-out double to left-center to score Ben Lasater, who singled earlier.
UNCG (25-25, 11-11 SoCon) tied the game at one a piece in the visitor half of the fourth. With the bases loaded and two outs, junior Adam Deleo singled through the left side to plate Greg Feltes. CofC responded and took a 2-1 lead in the same inning on a sacrifice fly by Michael Kohn. The Cougars added a run in the fifth on a RBI triple by Chris Campbell.
The Spartans cut the Cougar lead to one in the sixth when Brandon Harvey blasted his second home run of the season over the left-center wall. CofC answered once again in the same inning when Oliver Marmol laced a single to score Alex Garabedian, making it 4-2.
Garabedian gave the Cougars a pair of insurance runs in the seventh when he sent a two-run roundtripper to left-center and securing a 6-2 win.
Harvey finished 1-for-3 with a RBI for the Spartans, while Ricky Orton recorded a hit to extend his hitting streak to 19-game hitting streak.
The two teams continue the series with game two on Saturday at 6 pm.
