Campbell, Nelson lead UNCG past Georgia Southern, 6-0

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Thomas Campbell scored two goals and A.J. Nelson added a goal and two assists as UNC Greensboro cruised to a 6-0 win over Georgia Southern in Southern Conference men's soccer action on Saturday.

Keeper Peyton Ford posted nine saves in notching his third shutout of the season.

UNCG's six-goal explosion was its highest scoring output since a 6-0 win over Georgia Southern (0-13-1, 0-4-3 SoCon) in the first round of the SoCon tournament in 2005.

Campbell got the scoring started for the Spartans (5-7-3, 2-1-1 SoCon) in just the sixth minute, taking a Nelson through ball at the top of the box and beating GSU keeper Mike Gubosh one-on-one.

Campbell added his second score in the 56th minute to make it a 5-0 contest, scoring on a nearly identical play. E.J. O'Keeffe split a pair of Eagle defenders to hit Campbell in stride at the top of the box, and Campbell dribbled in and again beat Gubosh one-on-one. Ryan Davis also picked up an assist on the play.

Campbell had a couple of solid opportunities to complete the hat trick, but Gubosh stopped a shot at point-blank range and Campbell had another goal waved off for offides.

Nelson had assists on each of the Spartans' first two goals. In the 31st minute, Nelson took a ball down to the right touchline and slid a pass to Will Mack, who converted from 8 yards out to make it a 2-0 affair.

Cruz Oronos notched his second goal of the 2009 campaign just moments later, stealing a ball in the midfield, dribbling in and firing a shot lower left from 20 yards out at the 31:18 mark, just a minute and a half after checking into the game.

Nelson got in on the scoring act in the 51st minute, nodding home a Mike Magnotic free kick from about 12 yards out.

Joe Layton capped the scoring in the 80th minute, coming up with a takeaway and finishing top shelf for the final goal of the evening.

John Cox paced the Eagles with five shots in the game, including a strike with just under 16 minutes left that Ford was forced to punch over the crossbar.

Gubosh made six saves but allowed six goals for GSU.

UNCG held a 21-17 shot advantage and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday at Appalachian State. Opening kick is set for 7 p.m.
