GREENSBORO, NC UNC Greensboro exploded for five runs in the third and sixth innings as the Spartans defeated Wake Forest, 10-4, on Wednesday evening at the UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Spartans have now won four of their last five games, including a pair of wins over ACC opponents.
Sophomore Warren Slack pitched four innings of two-hit relief for the Spartans (12-18) to push his record to a perfect 3-0 this season. Ray Quinones helped pace the Spartans at the plate as he hit a pair of two RBI doubles in the game.
Wake Forest reliever Gabe Feldman allowed five runs in two innings of relief to pick up the loss for the Demon Deacons (20-16).
The Demon Deacons kicked off the scoring in the top of the first on a pair of runs. With one down in the inning, Shane Kroker drew a walk before advancing to third on a double by Dustin Hood. Kroker would later score on a Mike Murray sacrifice fly and Hood scored to make it 2-0 in favor of the visitors on Weldon Woodall's RBI single up the middle.
The Spartans batted around in the bottom of the third and plated five runs to take the early 5-2 lead. Kris Richards began the rally for the Spartans as he was issued a walk around a pair of groundouts. Corey Overholtzer kicked off the scoring on an RBI double down the right field line to score Richards. Pedro Leon followed with an RBI single to tie the game at two before moving over to third on Ed Jayjack's single through the right side. Ray Quinones hit his seventh double of the season off the base of the right field wall to score Leon and Jayjack and give the Spartans a 4-2 edge. Quinones then scored on Trevor Edwards' single down the right field line to cap off the scoring in the inning.
UNCG was able to take advantage of three Demon Deacon errors in the sixth inning as the Spartans scored five runs on just one hit to extend their lead to 10-2. Leadoff batter Bradley Raynor reached second on an error by the Wake Forest right fielder. Raynor would later score on a wild pitch on a walk to Alex Frederick. Frederick moved to third when Kris Richards was able to reach first on a throwing error by the third baseman. The Deacs committed their third error of the inning as O'Berry reached first and Frederick scored. Richards would then score on a sacrifice fly by Jayjack to give UNCG an 8-2 lead. Quinones followed with his second double of the evening to put the Spartans ahead 10-2.
Wake Forest took advantage of a Spartan error in the top of the ninth as the Demon Deacons scored two unearned runs to make the final score 10-4.
The Spartans will return to action this weekend as they host fellow SoCon opponent The Citadel for a three-game series during the Second Annual Katie Ball Memorial Weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday.
