SPARTANBURG, SC UNC Greensboro used seven extra base hits, including three home runs, as the Spartans defeated Wofford, 10-6, on Thursday evening at Russell C. King Field.

Rob Gilliam picked up the win for the Spartans (10-17, 1-10 SoCon) after pitching 5 1/3 innings of no-hit relief, including striking out the side in the ninth. The Spartans were led at the plate by Trevor Edwards who went 3-4 with a home run, two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored.

Wofford starter Scott Summers went just 2 1/3 innings and allowed nine earned runs on six hits to pick up the loss for the Terriers (13-14, 4-8 SoCon).

After a 20 minute delay due to a power outage, the Spartans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Michael Wall led off the inning with a single to center field before moving to second when Corey Overholtzer was hit by a pitch. Pedro Leon advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt and Wall was able to score from third on a sacrifice fly by Ed Jayjack to put UNCG up 1-0.

UNCG scored four runs in the top of the second to extend their lead to 5-0, highlighted by a three-run home run from Wall. Trevor Edwards led off the inning with a double to right center and moved to second on a groundout to the second baseman. Brent O'Berry was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners before a strike out made it two down in the inning. Wall followed with his second three-run home run in five days to put the Spartans ahead 4-0. Overholtzer was subsequently walked before scoring from first on a double to left field by Leon.

The Terriers responded with three runs in the bottom half of the second to narrow the Spartan lead to 5-3. Kyle Behrendt hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a passed ball. He would score on Mike McDonnell sacrifice fly to right field. After issuing a walk, Martin was able to get Jake Williams to strike out. The Terriers then hit back-to-back singles before Michael Gilmartin hit a double down the left field line to make the score 5-3.

The Spartans added four more runs in the top of the third on home runs by Edwards and Kris Richards. Ray Quinones walked to lead off the inning before Edwards hit a two-run home run to right center. Raymond Frias followed with a walk and later scored on Richards' first career home run to make the score 9-3.

Pedro Leon singled to lead off the fourth inning and scored later in the inning on Edwards' second double of the evening to put the Spartans ahead 10-3.

The Terriers responded in the bottom half of the fourth with a three-run home run by Gilmartin to cut the Spartans lead to 10-6.

Neither team was able to muster anymore runs in the final five innings to make the final score 10-6.

The Spartans and Terriers will meet Friday evening for the second game of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Russell C. King Field.
