DAVIDSON, N.C. - Freshman Brey Dorsett scored a career-high 11 points for UNC Greensboro, but Davidson used a 24-2 run spanning halftime to blow open what had been a tie game, and the Wildcats cruised to a 67-45 win over UNC Greensboro on Saturday at John M. Belk Arena.
Dorsett was the only player in double figures for UNCG (5-8, 2-3 Southern Conference), which shot a season-worst 21.7 percent from the floor (13-for-60).
Ashley Lax scored 15 points to pace four Wildcats in double figures. Davidson (5-7, 4-1 SoCon) also got 14 points from Kristen Johnsen, 10 from Alex Thompson and a double-double from Sophia Aleksandravicius with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
UNCG went without a field goal in the final 8:49 of the opening period and didn't score for the last 7:45 while the Wildcats strung together 15 straight points to blow the game open. An Agne Girstautaite layup to start the second half briefly halted the run, but Davidson tacked on nine more points in succession to make it a 39-17 game with 16:10 to play.
Girstautaite's free throw had made it a 15-all affair with 7:45 to play in the opening frame, but Lax got Davidson's big run going with a 3-pointer from in front of UNCG's bench.
Lax was far from done, as she scored six more points in the 15-0 portion of the spurt - giving her all nine of her first-half points in the run - as the Wildcats pulled away.
An Amy Clapper three-point play with 10:33 to play got the deficit back under 20 points at 50-32, but the Spartans would get no closer the rest of the way. Davidson led by as many as 27.
Eight of Dorsett's points came in the second half. She finished with a career-best three 3-pointers, two of which came after halftime.
Girstautaite blocked a pair of shots in the contest, moving her into sole possession of third place on UNCG's career list with 83. She entered the contest tied with former teammate Gini Grimsley, who had 81 blocked shots from 2005-09.
The Wildcats had things working at both ends of the floor. In addition to out-rebounding UNCG 51-43, Davidson drew three charges.
The loss snapped UNCG's modest two-game winning streak and was just the Spartans' second in their last six games. Saturday's contest also wrapped up UNCG's brutal start to the SoCon schedule, which saw the Spartans face the top five teams in the league standings in their first five games.
For Davidson, the win was its fifth in six tries after opening the season 0-6.
UNCG wraps up its three-game road swing at Wofford on Friday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
