GREENSBORO, N.C. – Chattanooga forced a UNCG turnover and converted it into a fast break layup with 15 seconds left in double overtime and the Spartans couldn't get their final shot to fall with seven seconds left as they fell to the Mocs, 111-110, on Thursday night in McKenzie Arena. It was a game that saw numerous individual and school records fall for both teams.

The game set a new school record for the most points in the Division I era for UNCG, breaking the old mark of 108 set against Elon in 2004 in a triple overtime game. Also, the 221 points scored by the two teams is the highest point total between two Division I teams this season.

The Spartans fell to 3-16 overall and 3-6 in the Southern Conference with the loss, while the North Division-leading Mocs improved to 12-10 on the year and 8-2 in the league.

With the two teams knotted at 100 after 45 minutes, the two teams settled in for a second overtime. After a UTC free throw tied it at 102, UNCG went on a 7-0 run on a Korey Van Dussen layup, Brandon Evans 3-pointer and fast break layup by Van Dussen, to put the Spartans in front 109-102 with 1:59 left.

With the Spartans leading 110-105, Ricky Taylor hit a 3 with 1:29 remaining to make it a two-point game. The Mocs went into their full court press and forced a UNCG turnover with 32 seconds left and the Spartans fouled. Dontay Hampton was only able to knock down one free throw to make it a 110-109 game with 26 seconds left.

On the ensuing inbounds, the Spartans tried to work the ball past half court with the Mocs pressing full court, as UNCG was nearing midcourt the Mocs poked the ball away and Keegan Bell tossed it to Taylor who was all alone for the easy layup.

UNCG had a chance to win the game with seven seconds left, but Trevis Simpson's jumper in the lane rolled off the rim and the Spartans weren't able to collect the rebound. The Spartans had one final chance after Chris Early intentionally missed his second free throw, but Kyle Randall's full court heave at the buzzer fell short.

"It was a great basketball game for the fans," said coach Mike Dement. "There were a lot of good thing on the floor for both teams. Everybody hit big shots back and forth, and neither team was able to got stops.

"We are down 20 something in the second half. We come back and play great and take a six or seven point lead with a minute and something to go. You have to do a lot of great things to do that. We just didn't finish it. We missed a free throw. We couldn't play defense without fouling. They hit a three while we were in zone. We shoot a tremendous percentage in the second half, and that shows us that we can put points up."

Van Dussen led the Spartans with a career-high 33 points, including 15 in the two overtime periods, on 13-21 shooting, including 6-10 from behind the arc. Evans also set a career-high for UNCG as he posted 28 points on 8-11 from the field and an impressive 7-10 from 3-point land. Randall and Simpson were both in double figures as well as they posted 18 and 13 points, respectively.

Chattanooga was led by Taylor who had a game- and career-high 41 points to lead the Mocs. He went 12-for-18 from the field and 13-15 from the charity stripe. Keegan Bell also had an impressive game with 24 points, including a game-tying 3-pointer with less than five seconds left in regulation. Early had the lone double-double of the game with 11 points and a matching 11 rebounds.

Most of the fans in the arena wouldn't have believed the game would end that way early in the second half as Chattanooga led by as many as 20 at 59-39 with 14:57 left in the second half on a 3 by Taylor.

UNCG continued to fight though as Evans drained back-to-back 3's before Van Dussen added one of his own. Evans then was fouled on a 3-pointer and made all three free throws before drilling another 3 to cap a 15-0 run that spanned three minutes.

After a Jeremy Saffore dunk made it 61-54, Van Dussen scored a conventional three-point play and added a 3-pointer to make it 61-60 with 10:18 left in regulation.

The Spartans finally broke through on a layup by Simpson with 6:18 remaining to take a 70-68 lead. That was the first lead UNCG had since the 10:09 mark of the first half.

With time ticking down in regulation, Randall drove to the basket and scored on a layup with 1:18 in regulation to tie the game at 80. Simpson then stole the ball on the next Moc possession and Randall hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key as the shot clock was about to expire with 19.8 seconds remaining to put the Spartans in front, 83-80.

After a timeout by Chattanooga, the Mocs gave the ball to Bell who hit his own 3-pointer from the top of the key with 4.8 seconds left in regulation. The Spartans' desperation 3 at the end of the regulation wasn't on the mark and the team embarked on their first overtime.

The first overtime was action packed as the teams were tied six times and exchanged the lead five different times. A pair of Taylor free throws with 40 seconds left gave Chattanooga a 98-95 advantage, but Van Dussen responded with a 3-pointer to tie the game at 98 with 28 seconds remaining.

With the Mocs playing for the last possession, Early drove the lane and went for the layup, but was fouled by David Williams with 5.2 seconds left in overtime. After knocking down a pair of free throws, Drew Parker threw the ball to Simpson who received it at the top of the key. He then drove the length of the court and scored on a layup as the buzzer went off to tie the game at 100 and send the game into a second overtime.

Chattanooga held an incredible edge at the free throw line for the game as the Mocs went to the charity stripe 53 times, compared to just 18 trips for UNCG. The Spartans were also whistled for 37 fouls in the game, resulting in Aloysius Henry, Aaron Brackett, Williams and Van Dussen to foul out, while UTC had 19 team fouls.

UNCG also set a new school record for 3-point makes and attempts as the Spartans went 17-43 from behind the arc. The Spartans set the school record for field goal makes and attempts in the Division I era after shooting 39-for-83 from the field.

The 22 assists by UNCG was a season-high and the Spartans set a season high for steals with 13, as well.

The Spartans will continue their road trip as they travel down to Birmingham, Ala. to face Samford on Saturday at 5 p.m. EST.
