The Spartans (3-9, 0-3) fired at 39 percent from the field in the second half to end up at 34 percent for the contest. Junior Janae' Stevenson (Columbia, S.C./Eau Claire) and sophomore Jarae Savage (Marietta, Ga./North Cobb) paced the Spartan offense with 14 points each while freshman Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) chipped in with 13 of her own. Stevenson blocked three shots and is now one block away from moving into a tie for third place on the program career top 10 list.
Ashlen Dewart opened the scoring at the 19:15 mark by putting in a layup before senior Sidnei Harmon (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) answered with a putback off an offensive rebound to tie the score. After a three by Black made the score 5-2, UNCG scored six of the next 10 points to pull within 9-8 with 14:05 left on the clock.
A big scoring drought hurt UNCG for the next six minutes as the Lady Mocs were able to net 15-straight points to move in front by 16 at 24-8. However, the Spartans responded with a 10-0 run which was capped by a Savage jumper to make the score 24-18 at the 5:47 mark. The Blue and Gold went cold again in the last five minutes of the half, as a pair of three-pointers helped Chattanooga build its cushion back to 36-18. Mason banked in a shot at the buzzer to leave the margin at 16 going into the break.
Mason led UNCG with seven points in the first 20 minutes while Christopher netted 11 for Chattanooga. The teams ended up even on the glass with 21 rebounds each, but the Spartans knocked down just nine of their 30 attempts for a 30-percent shooting effort.
In the first minute of the second period, Kylie Lambert and Stevenson traded baskets before a 7-0 run helped the Lady Mocs push their lead out to 45-22. UNCG kept itself in the contest with a 10-2 run over the next four and half minutes as two free throws by Savage sliced the Spartans' deficit to 47-32 with 12:40 left in the game. A triple by Savage kept Chattanooga from extending its advantage to far, her shot keeping the score at 55-39 at the 8:43 mark. However, UNCG ran out of steam the rest of the way and could not rally any closer.
The Blue and Gold remains at home for its next game, hosting Samford Monday at Fleming Gymnasium. The Spartans and Bulldogs will tip at 7 p.m.
