GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's basketball team (3-4) is set to host Tennessee Tech at 2 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium for non-conference action. The Golden Eagles (2-5) won't be the only ones that the Spartans will be welcoming as some of the most decorated alumni in program history will be in attendance. For fans unable to attend, the game will be streamed live on the SoCon Digital Network and as always; live stats will be available at UNCGSpartans.com.
Saturday's match up marks the first time in program history the two will meet. UNCG is looking to improve upon its 3-1 home slate this season and get back on the winning track following Tuesday's road loss at USC Upstate.
Senior Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) has been collecting league honors all week long. Tuesday she was named the Southern Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the second straight week, becoming the first player in program history to earn back-to-back weekly SoCon honors. Wednesday morning it was announced that she was named the SoCon Student-Athlete of the week, becoming the first Spartan to earn such honors for the 2015-16 academic year. Thursday afternoon she hit the trifecta earning top honors as SoCon Women's Basketball Athlete of the month following a stellar November performance to start her senior campaign. Mason is 179 points shy of passing Angie Polk-Jones '89 for UNCG's career points leader.
Mason leads the league and ranks fourth in the nation in points per game averaging 25.7. She also is atop the SoCon in total steals (17) and steals per game (2.4). Junior Mariah Wilson (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) is 29th in the nation in blocks per game (2.4) and her 79 career blocks to date rank tied for 6th all time with Sandi Reid '02.
India Timpton (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) leads the team in rebounds per game (8.7). This week she was named one of 103 nominees for the Allstate Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Good Works Team.
Tennessee Tech is coming off a 47-64 loss at Xavier Thursday. Samaria Howard leads the Golden Eagles averaging 17.4 points per game 37.5 percent from the field and 81.6-percent from the free throw line. Hannah Goolsby serves as Tech's pivotal player from behind the arc. Goolsby currently averages 43.9 percent from the 3-point range and 41.9 percent from the field. As a team, the Golden Eagles average 36.9 percent from the field, 27.3 percent from downtown and 65.7 percent from the charity stripe.
Polk-Jones and Reid will be amongst the alumni in attendance Saturday afternoon. At halftime Director of Athletics Kim Record will recognize the group and their accomplishments during their time as members of the UNCG women's basketball team.
