Box Score CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A late first half run helped No. 21 Chattanooga pull away as the UNCG women's basketball fell, 76-52, Saturday at McKenzie Arena.
The Spartans fall to 5-20 and are 0-10 in the SoCon. Chattanooga earns its 18th win in a row to improve to 22-3, 10-0 in conference play.
Sophomore Jade Scaife (Fort Washington, Md./Archbishop Spalding) produced her first career double-double after scoring 21 points off 9-of-14 and grabbed 10 rebounds. Scaife hit a bunch of jump shots but had four offensive rebounds in the game.
Classmate Shanese Harris (Chesapeake, Va/Western Branch) added eight points off 3-of-6 from the floor.
The Spartans finished shooting 42 percent off 21-of-50 from the field and only hit one three on four attempts. UNCG was a solid 9-for-14 from the free throw line. Chattanooga finished shooting 51.8 percent off 29-of-56 from the floor. The Mocs hit 7-of-21 from the three-point line and scored 23 points off UNCG turnovers.
Sophomore Chelsey Shumpert had 15 points and Jasmine Joyner had 14 points to lead Chattanooga.
In the first half, the Mocs opened the game on a 7-0 run off a layup from Joyner just three minutes into the game. The Blue and Gold answered with a 8-4 spurt off a layup from Scaife to make the score 11-8 with 13:36 left in the half.
At the 8:46 mark, UNCG was keeping the game close at 16-14 off a jumper from Harris. Two minutes later, the two-point game remained after a layup from senior Jarae Savage (Marietta, Ga./North Cobb) at the 6:15 mark in the half making the score 20-18.
Chattanooga would explode closing the half on a 18-2 run to take a 38-20 advantage into halftime thanks to a bunch of fastbreak layups and open three pointers.
In the second half, the Mocs would increase their lead to 22-points off a layup from Joyner with 16:44 left making the score 46-24. Scaife continued to played hard scoring the next eight UNCG points off jumpers and a couple of free throws to make the score 51-30 with 14:11 remaining.
The Mocs would keep pushing holding a 63-37 lead after a jumper by Sydney Vanlandingham with under nine minutes left.
Scaife scored two more layups cutting the lead to 67-44 with 6:38 left in the contest. The Mocs would outscore UNCG 9-8 to finish the game as freshman Jayda Luckie (Norfolk, Va./Maury) made a layup with a minute remaining accounting for the final basket.
UNCG returns home to face ETSU Monday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. at Fleming Gymnasium.
