GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's tennis team will take on UNCW Friday, Feb. 27 at 1:30 p.m. at the UNCW Courts and will finish the weekend in Boiling Springs, N.C. against Gardner-Webb Saturday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m.
The Spartans are 2-2 after dropping a tough match to rival Charlotte, 6-1, back on Feb. 15. Freshman Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) earned UNCG's lone victory to improve to 4-0 in singles.
The Blue and Gold have earned victories against Campbell (W, 5-2) and Norfolk State (W, 6-1). UNCG had its match postponed against Coastal Carolina last weekend due to inclement weather.
Senior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) lost his first match in singles against Charlotte's Forrest Edwards, 6-0, 2-6, 7-5. Phillips is 3-1 playing at No. 1 singles and junior Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) is 2-1 in three singles matches.
In doubles, Phillips and Thompson hold a 3-1 record at No. 1 doubles to lead the team. The duo has won three-straight doubles matches. Freshmen James Gray (Jacksonville, Fla./The Oaks School) and Logan Walker (Stuart, Fla./Morningside) won their first doubles match against Norfolk State.
UNCW is 6-1 on the season and own a four-match winning streak with victories over Louisiana-Lafayette, USC Upstate, Coastal Carolina and Navy. Andres Torres holds a 7-0 record in singles and is 4-0 at the No. 6 singles position. Javier Restrepo is 5-0 in singles with a 3-0 mark at the No. 5 singles position. In doubles, Santtu Leskinen and Christian Van der Burgh have a 4-2 record at No. 1 doubles.
Gardner-Webb lost two matches this week to weather and enters with a 4-4 record. The Runnin' Bulldogs own victories against USC Upstate (W, 6-1), George State (W, 4-3), Davidson (W, 4-3) and Wofford (W, 4-3). Benjamin Kaszas is 2-5 in singles with a 2-3 record at No. 1 singles.
