Furman Blanks Baseball To Capture Series Win

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Furman held the UNCG offense in check for nine innings Saturday and the Paladins captured a league series win with a 10-0 victory at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

The Spartans (14-17, 5-6) are now tied with Furman (15-18, 5-6) in the Southern Conference standings as the teams near the halfway point of the league schedule.

For the second-straight contest, the Paladins put up double figures in the hit column with 12 of which four went for extra bases. UNCG mustered up seven hits but left 12 men on base in the shutout loss. The Blue and Gold put runners on base in every inning but stranded them all.

Junior infielder Collin Woody tallied two hits to pace the Spartans while Blake Chisholm was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two driven in for Furman. UNCG had its school-record streak of 12 games with at least one home run snapped.

Freshman RHP Andrew Wantz suffered his first loss of the season and dropped to 5-1 after surrendering nine runs (six earned) on 12 hits over 6 2/3 innings. He did not issue a walk and struck out a career-high eight batters. Grant Schuermann threw seven innings and scattered seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

Carter Grote and Griffin Davis recorded RBI singles in the top of the third to give the visitors all they would need. The Paladins put the game away in the middle innings scoring five runs over the fourth and fifth frames to push ahead 7-0. A pair of runs in the seventh inning and a final tally in the ninth accounted for the final score.

The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. as the Spartans will look to avoid the sweep.
