Birmingham, Ala.- The UNCG women's basketball team (8-14, 0-7 SoCon) looks to snap Samford's four-game win streak Thursday night when the Spartans meet the Bulldogs for a 5 p.m. (EST) tip-off inside the Pete Hanna Center. The 14-8 Bulldogs hold the longest win-streak in the Southern Conference and are tied with Mercer in the league standings with a 6-1 slate. Fans can watch live on ESPN 3 or the Watch ESPN app.
The Spartans are 4-12 all-time against Samford and 2-8 since head coach Wendy Palmer took the reigns of the program during the 2011-12 season. UNCG is looking for it's first win at Samford since a 52-51 road thriller February 9, 2013, during Palmer's second season as head coach. The Spartans are 1-6 on the road against Samford and hope to avenge a five-point loss to the Bulldogs earlier this season.
Last time the two teams met was January 9 when a late Bulldogs push handed the Spartans just their second conference loss at that time for a 57-52 win. Samford is 5-2 at home in the Pete Hanna Center this season while UNCG is 1-8 on the road.
Despite leading the SoCon in scoring average (66.9), UNCG is currently in last place in the league standings. Senior Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee) paces the Spartans offense with a SoCon-leading 23.2 points per game, which ranks eighth in the nation. India Timpton (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) is averaging a team-high 7.5 rebounds per game. Junior Jade Scaife (Fort Washington, Md./Archbishop Spalding) is coming off her fifth doube-double of the season while Shanese Harris (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) has scored in double figures in the last four games.
Samford is led by Taylor Reece and Destiney Elliott with 9.2 and 9.1 points per game, respectively. Elliot also leads the team in boards with 7.8 rebounds per game. Samford's current four-game win streak began back on January 21 against ETSU. They then pulled a 48-43 win over defending SoCon Champs Chattanooga on January 23 handing the Mocs their second league loss in as many games. The Bulldogs most recent wins were on the road at Furman and Wofford.
