Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG Baseball bounced back from a tough 6-4 loss to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons last night, to rack up 18 runs on 17 hits en route to an 18-3 victory at the UNCG Baseball Stadium on Wednesday night. The Spartans now improve to 26-9 on the season, while Wake Forest falls to 20-16. UNCG improves to 19-1 at home on the year.
“Collin Woody, after what he went through in yesterday's game, had a great game.” Head Coach Link Jarrett said, “He doesn't have equipment responsibilities, and last night, watching him bang through the seats and the railings, carrying equipment that he didn't need to, I thought, 'this is a tough kid, it'll be fun to see how he bounces back'. His first at bat, when we're already down one, that was a very key home run. He's a tough kid, there's a lot that went on during the game, but that was what I took as an answer for what went on last night.”
“Keaton (Haack) pitched great. He has a way that he needs to pitch, and Jerry (Edwards) understands his style and they called a great game and Keaton executed. We had a couple key double plays, one after he walked the lead off guy, getting (Will) Craig (2015 ACC Player of the Year) to ground into the 4-6-3 was key. The plate discipline we had, Moritz's bunt, Spitznagel navigating his at bat, using the bunt, the discipline in the bunting was as important as all the hits and the runs we had tonight. We got some guys who haven't worked much on the mound this year some innings. I'm really proud of our guys to bounce back the way they did after a tough loss last night. This was a good win for us.”
UNCG had seven players connect for multiple hits in the game, led by L.J. Kalawaia (Wailuku, Hawai'i/Ohlone College) and Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) each had three hits. Kalawaia led all players with five RBI in the game. Trejo scored three runs while driving another.
Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) and Andrew Moritz (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) each connected for two hits, scored three runs and drove in one. Collin Woody (Tampa, Fla./College of Central Florida) also earned a pair of hits, including a solo home run in the bottom of the second. Woody drove in three runs and scored two more.
Ryne Sigmon (Danville, Va./Danville CC) and Michael Goss (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga St. CC) each had a pair of hits, driving in two each. Sigmon and Goss scored one and two runs, respectively.
Jake Kusz (Durham, N.C./Riverside) rounded out the offensive attack, connecting for a double, scoring one run and driving in another.
Keaton Haack (Greensboro, N.C./Pitt CC) (2-1) started on the hill and picked up the win. Haack worked 6.0 innings, allowed two hits and one earned run while recording five strikeouts. Drew Goodman (Charlotte, N.C./Hopewell) worked in one innings, allowing only one hit.
Easton Welch (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) worked in 1.0 inning, striking out two hitters. Jake Mayhew (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) worked in the ninth, allowing two hits and striking out one batter.
The Demon Deacons took a lead early, scoring a run in the top of the first inning. After a lead off walk, a hit and run moved Jonathan Pryor to third base and put Kevin Conway at first. Gavin Sheets ground into a double play, but Pryor scored on the play to give Wake Forest a 1-0 lead.
UNCG took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Woody led off, belting his sixth home run of the season on the second pitch of his at bat to tie the game at one. After a Stewart walk, he was able to move around to third for Goss. Goss hit a sacrifice fly to center field deep enough to score Stewart and put UNCG up 2-1.
The Spartans increased their lead, plating four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Two walks and a bunt single loaded the bases for Kalawaia. Kalawaia drew a walk before Woody hit a sacrifice fly to right to advance all the runners. Stewart drove in another on a ground out to second, again advancing the runners, before a wild pitch allowed Kalawaia to score and put the Spartans up 6-1.
The Navy and Gold hung another crooked number in the bottom of the fourth. Trejo, Spitznagel and Moritz connected for back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases for Kalawaia. Kalawaia hit his third triple of the year to clear the bases and give UNCG a 9-1 lead.
Goss started another four-run rally in the bottom of the fifth frame. Kusz doubled down the left field line to score Goss before a Trejo singled to put runners on the corners. After a pitching change, Spitznagel doubled to left center field to bring in Kusz. Moritz then ground out to third be the play allowed Trejo to score. Kalawaia finished up the scoring, singling up the middle to score Spitznagel and put the Spartans up 13-1.
UNCG tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by back-to-back triples from Sigmon and Goss.
