Link Jarrett Earns Career Win 100 in Victory Over Campbell

Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – Spartan Baseball completed the season sweep of the Campbell Camels on Tuesday evening at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.  The Spartans earned a 10-2 victory.  The win marks career-win number 100 for Head Coach Link Jarrett.  UNCG improves to 32-11 overall, while Campbell falls to 22-20.  The Spartans previously defeated Campbell 8-2, on Mar. 30th in Buies Creek, N.C.

“That's a quality win over a good ball club.” Coach Jarrett said,  “Our guys are resilient, and tough, and they played well today.  Hensley had a rough first inning, and he had to tell our team what the difference was going to be from the first five, or six hitters and the rest of the game. His fastball command was the difference, and he adjusted.  A lot of guys had good days at the plate.  (Michael) Goss, Cesar (Trejo), Devin (Ruiz), (Ben) Spitznagel, (Dillon) Stewart, just up and down the lineup, was productive.  We came out and executed well.  We played a fairly clean defensive game, with a quality start.  (Andrew) Wantz was as good as I've ever seen, and (Collin) Woody came in the ninth. He (Woody) hasn't worked in a couple weeks and that was big because we're going to need him down the stretch.”

The bottom of the order did a bulk of the damage offensively, Tuesday night.  Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) led the way offensively hitting in the ninth spot of the order.  The freshman went 3-for-3 with four RBI, three runs scored, a triple, and a home run. Michael Goss (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga St. CC), hitting in the eight-hole, added another three-hit performance, with a double and scored three times.

Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC), Dillon Stewart (Dunn, N.C./Brunswick CC) and L.J. Kalawaia (Wailuku, Hawai'i/Ohlone College) added two hits and an RBI each, in the top three spots of the lineup.  Devin Ruiz (Pennsauken, N.J./Paul VI) finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.

Collin Woody (Tampa, Fla./College of Central Florida) finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored, with Jake Kusz (Durham, N.C./Riverside) adding one hit, a run and an RBI.

Bryce Hensley (Asheville, N.C./Catawba Valley CC) started, throwing a career-high 7.0 innings, allowing only five hits, and two earned runs, while striking out four batters.  Hensley retired 13 in a row before an error put a runner on.  Hensley didn't allow a hit until the seventh inning after giving up three in the first frame.

Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs) made his team-leading 23rd appearance out of the bullpen.  Wantz worked 1.0 inning, striking out one.  Woody threw the ninth inning, allowing a hit and striking out the side.

Campbell got on the board first, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.  After a solo home run from Anthony Lopez, Zach Minnick connected for an RBI double to go up 2-0.

UNCG cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third inning.  After three singles loaded the bases, Kalawaia ground out to first, allowing Trejo to score.

The Spartans took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Back-to-back singles from Kusz and Goss started the frame, before Trejo drilled a bases-clearing triple to left center.  Spitznagel followed, shooting a two-strike pitch through the left side to bring in Trejo and give UNCG a 4-2 lead.

The Navy and Gold increased their lead to 7-2, scoring three more runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Woody started the inning with a single up the middle before scoring on a Ruiz double off the wall in right center. After a sacrifice bunt moved Ruiz to third, Kusz brought him in on a deep fly ball to left.  With the bases loaded, Stewart drew a walk to bring in the third run of the inning.

UNCG tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth.  Woody started the inning with a walk, and was able to steal second.  Ruiz drilled a double to left field to bring him in and put the Spartans up 8-2.

The Spartans return to action on Friday, April 29th as they host the Samford Bulldogs for the first of three Southern Conference games at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
