Stewart and Woody Go Deep in Victory Over Wofford

Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Dillon Stewart (Dunn, N.C./Brunswick CC) and Collin Woody (Tampa, Fla./College of Central Florida) each hit their tenth home runs of the season in the top of the fifth inning to help earn UNCG baseball a 6-1 victory over the Wofford Terriers on Saturday afternoon.  UNCG improves to 34-14 overall, and 12-5 in the Southern Conference with the win.  Wofford falls to 27-22, and 9-8 in the SoCon with the loss.

“(Matt) Frisbee had a great performance on the mound.” Head Coach Link Jarrett said, “He had some great velocity on his fastball and he kept it down, navigating that lineup very well.  For Frisbee to come in to today's game, after what he saw last night, says a lot about his toughness to go out there and perform the way he did.  He really carried us today.  Our defense was really solid today as well.  L.J. (Kalawaia) made some difficult plays in right, (Ryne) Sigmon played a really nice center field, (Collin) Woody had a couple clean plays, Goss had a great pick on a hard hit ball in the sixth, Spitznagel had a good catch on a sinking liner in the third. Kusz did a great job blocking, receiving and helping Frisbee manage that lineup.  We did enough offensively to get the win. We had a couple big blows that propelled us.  Kusz's two-strike two-out single was a key at bat.  We talked about being better with two strikes today and we had six hits with two strikes.  I'm proud of the way we played today.

The Spartan offense connected for nine hits in the contest, led by a 3-for-3 performance from Woody.  Woody added a double and a single to go with his solo home run.  Stewart finished with a pair of hits, including the two run home run.

Michael Goss (Cartersville, Ga./Chattanooga St. CC) and Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) each finished with a hit and a run scored.  Jake Kusz (Durham, N.C./Riverside) finished 1-for-4 with two RBI, connecting for a two strike, two-run single in the second inning.

Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) added a hit, with Ryne Sigmon (Danville, Va./Danville CC) scoring a run.

Matt Frisbee (Candler, N.C./Enka) (4-3) delivered a quality start on Saturday afternoon.  The freshman gave up three hits, one earned run and struck out four batters, earning his fourth win of the year. Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs) (2) earned his second save of the season, going 2.1 innings, and striking out three batters.  Wantz entered with the tying run on deck in the bottom of the seventh.

UNCG grabbed the lead in the top of the second inning.  Woody led off getting hit by a pitch, before a walk to Sigmon and Goss loaded the bases after getting hit by a pitch.  Kusz gave the Spartans the lead, singling through the left side to put UNCG up 2-0.

The Spartans added to their lead in the top of the fifth.  After Trejo led off the inning with a single, Stewart connected for his tenth home run of the year to bring in two.  Not to be outdone, Woody belted his tenth home run of the season just two batters later to put go up 5-0.

Wofford cut into the Spartan lead in the bottom of the seventh.  After a lead off hit and a walk put two on, a double from Kody Ruedisili scored the first Terrier run.  Wantz came in with two runners in scoring position and earned a strikeout to limit the damage.

The Spartans tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning.  Goss led off with a walk before stealing second. An error on the play moved him to third and a wild pitch allowed him to score.

UNCG and Wofford will return to action tomorrow, as they will face off in a rubber match on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Russell C. Field.
