Baseball Carries Winning Streak into Matchup at NC State

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG baseball, winners of its last five games and 14 of the last 16, will take this hot streak to Doak Field at Dail Park as the Spartans are set to take on the NC State Wolfpack.  UNCG enters with a 21-10 overall record, while the Wolfpack sport an 18-15 mark having taken two of three games from Florida State over the weekend.

A Little History -- NC State

The Spartans and Wolfpack have played 35 times, with NC State holding an 27-8 advantage.  Earlier this season, the Wolfpack came over to Greensboro earlier this season, defeating UNCG 8-2.  The last time at Doak Field at Dail Park, UNCG suffered an 8-4 loss after giving up six runs, five unearned in the bottom of the eighth inning.  The Blue and Gold earned an 8-5, 11-inning victory over the Wolfpack in 2013, the first year of Link Jarrett's tenure. 

Scouting the Spartans

UNCG enters having won five-straight games and 14 of the last 16 games.  The Spartans are fresh their first-ever three-game sweep of the Furman Paladins.  UNCG and Furman played tough with the Spartans earning victories by scores of 3-1, 7-6 (11 innings) and 9-3. 

The Spartan offense is led by freshman standout Caleb Webster (Randleman, N.C./Randleman).  Webster has hit for a .438 average in 25 games this season.  Since being inserted into the starting lineup, UNCG has gone 19-4.  Webster has yet to make an error while manning the hot corner.  The rookie sensation has recorded hits in 19 of the last 21 games, with six multiple RBI games.  Statistically, Webster is the toughest player in the country to strike out.  Striking out just three times this season, his 29.7 at bats between strikeouts is the best in the country. Austin Embler (Southern Pines, N.C./Pinecrest) has hit at a .382 average with three home runs this season.  Andrew Moritz (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) has started 30 games this year and leads the team with six triples.  That total is tied for the most in the country.  The team has hit 27 triples this year, leading the country.  Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) leads the team with six home runs this season, and has driven in a team-best 32 runs.

Jake Lewis (Wendell, N.C./Corinth Holders) will be starting his first game of the season against NC State.  Lewis has appeared in six games this season, working in 10.0 innings.  The sophomore has struck out 13 hitters and has earned a 9.00 ERA.  In his last outing against ETSU, Lewis logged 2.1 innings, striking out three batters.  The Spartan bullpen is anchored by three players with at least nine appearances.  Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs) leads the team with 15 appearances.  He has been part of the scoring decision in 11 of those outings.  Wantz has gone 5-2, with four saves in 40.2 innings of work.  He has struck out a team-high 45 batters to go with a 4.65 ERA.  Chad Sykes (Creedmoor, N.C./Voyager Academy) has made 14 appearances and leads the team with seven saves on the year.  Working primarily as a 9th inning specialist, Sykes has thrown in 18.2 innings in 14 appearances. His last outing against Furman was his longest of the season, throwing 3.0 innings as UNCG earned a walk-off victory in the 11th inning.  Alex Sova (Midland, Mich./Kellogg CC) is likely to be the first reliever out of the bullpen Tuesday night.  The junior has appeared in nine games, throwing in 13.2 innings with 16 strikeouts. 

Scouting the Wolfpack

NC State enters having won one of its bigger series over the weekend, taking two of three games from Florida State at home.  The Wolfpack opened the season ranked in the top 10 in the country, but got off to a bit of a slow start.  NC State has earned an 18-15 record and have won four of its last five games.  After falling the the Seminoles 16-7 Friday night, the Wolfpack bounced back to earn a 4-3 victory Saturday and an 8-4 series clinching victory Sunday afternoon. 

The NC State offense has hit at a .268 clip, led by Brad Debo's .359.  Debo has driven in 25 RBI with eight doubles and three home runs this season.  Joe Dunand has had a knack for the long ball this season as he leads the team with 11 this year.  He has also driven in a team-best 26 along with Will Wilson.  Wilson hits at a .284 average with 24 runs scored, 12 doubles, two triples and a pair of home runs.  Josh McLain has stolen a team-best nine bases while hitting at a .346 average in 33 games played. 

Johnny Piedmonte will get his second start of the season Tuesday night.  Piedmonte has earned a 1-0 record and a 2.92 ERA in 12.1 innings of work.  He has struck out nine hitters and hitters hit at a .167 average.  Four relievers have made at least 10 appearances out of the bullpen this season.  Austin Staley leads the team with 17 appearances, working in 29.1 innings and earning four saves.  He has earned a 2.76 ERA while striking out 30 hitters.  Joe O'Donnell has earned a 4-0 record in 13 appearances.  He has struck out 30 hitters in 27.0 innings. Another frequently used arm for the Wolfpack is Kent Klyman.  Klyman has earned a 2.70 ERA in 10.0 innings and has struck out five hitters. Evan Brabrand has appearend in 11 games, earning a 6.60 ERA in 15.0 innings.  Zach Usselman has made 10 appearances, throwing in 12.2 innings.  Usselman has earned an 8.53 ERA while striking out 16 hitters and earning an 0-1 record.  The Wolfpack pitching staff has recorded a 4.30 ERA in 295 innings.
