Baseball Hosts Oakland in First Midweek Action of 2018

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG baseball will welcome the Oakland Golden Grizzlies to UNCG Baseball Stadium Tuesday early evening for the first midweek contest of the 2018 season at 4 p.m. The Spartans enter the contest after defeating Appalachian State in two of three games over the weekend. Oakland enters at 1-3 after playing in Kissimmee, Florida against Pittsburgh, Old Dominion and Iowa.

This is the first meeting between the Golden Grizzlies and the Spartans. Oakland finished the 2017 season 17-40 and 11-19 in the Horizon League. UNCG has never matched up with a member of the current Horizon League.

Jake Mayhew (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) will get the start on the mound. This will be Mayhew's first start of his career. In his freshman season, Mayhew made three appearances out of the bullpen and redshirted in 2017.

UNCG saw three relievers log innings without giving up a run over the weekend. Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs) made two appearances, earning a 2-0 record in 5.0 innings. He struck out seven hitters and gave up two hits. Jack Maynard (Crozet, Va./Patrick Henry CC) pitched 3.2 innings Sunday, going 3.2 innings and tying a career-high with eight strikeouts. Easton Welch (Randleman, N.C./Gardner-Webb) also made two appearances and earned his first career save. He didn't allow a run and induced a pair of double plays.

The Spartan offense is hitting at a .364 clip, led by freshman first baseman Josh Madole (Hampstead, N.C./Topsail). Madole is hitting at a .556 clip with a double, an RBI and scored three runs. Cesar Trejo (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) drove in eight RBI and slugged two home runs in the weekend series with App State.

Ben Hart leads the Golden Grizzlies offense with a .357 average. He hit a homer and a triple, driving in five runs and scoring four times on opening weekend. Oakland's offense hits at a .223 team average and stole six bases in four games.

Oakland's pitching staff owns a 5.18 team ERA led by reliever Nate Schweers. Schwees made two appearances, earning a 1.80 ERA, allowing one earned run in 5.0 innings of work with four strikeouts. Beau Keathley also made two appearances out of the bullpen. He didn't allow a run in 2.2 innings of work and gave up just two hits. The Golden Grizzlies have not declared a starter.
