Spartans Enjoy Three Multi-Run Innings in 8-2 Win

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG baseball team took advantage of three multi-run innings in the first, third and eighth innings en route to an 8-2 victory over visiting Quinnipiac at the UNCG Baseball Field on Saturday, Feb. 16.

Junior Caleb Webster put together a solid performance in the win, going 3-for-4 (double, 2 runs) against the Bobcats. The Spartans (2-0) finished with three doubles on the afternoon, including one each from Greg Hardison and Ryan Caveness.

Jeremiah Triplett (1-0) earned the victory for UNCG on the mound, striking out seven Bobcat hitters in the process. He was responsible for only one run on the afternoon.

The Spartans put two runs across in the first inning, capitalizing on a single by Josh Madole, which plated Austin Embler and Webster in succession.

The UNCG lead ballooned to 5-0 two innings later when the Spartans tacked on three runs in the frame. The first came on a single to first by Embler, scoring Hardison, for the 3-0 lead. Webster followed with a double into left centerfield, plating Embler as he moved to third on the throw. The final run crossed the plate when Madole brought home Webster on a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Quinnipiac (0-2) scored its first run in the seventh inning, but the Spartans countered with three runs in the home half of the eighth to put the game out of reach. Zach Kuchmaner scored the first run of the inning after a sacrifice bunt by Jacquez Koonce. Hardison brought home the second run of the inning, in the form of Hogan Windish, with a double into centerfield. Koonce himself scored the game's final run.

“Triplett pitched a very very nice game, he had good feel for multiple secondary pitches,” said head coach Link Jarrett. “He moved his fastball around well. His slider got better as he went. It was our second very nice start. Chad Sykes back on the mound was exciting to see and he worked very hard to get back out there. Striking out the side in the ninth shows the ability he has.

“Our team defense was very good today,” added Jarrett. “Webster and Hardison both made very good and timely plays. Madole's two-out two-strike hit in the first was huge as their lefthanded starter was very good. Again, our baserunning and bunting helped us manufacture offensively, and we need those facets to be in play for us.”

UNCG looks to complete the sweep on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. when Austin Koehn goes to the mound to face Arthur Corriera.
