UNCG Athletics Reflect On Title IX's Anniversary

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The vital impact of the Education Amendments Act Law that was signed on June 23, 1972 has been seismic. Those 37 words allowed millions of dreams to become a reality.

In addition, women have confidently developed skills needed to succeed in life while realizing their true potential. Women have more opportunities to be critical decision makers, visionaries, and leaders.

Coming up on the 50th anniversary of this landmark decision, the impact of Title IX has been felt all over the world, including here at UNC Greensboro (UNCG) where teams compete at a high level thanks to a group of talented, gritty, resilient, and bold student-athletes who have made the dreams that have come before them come true.

In addition to deepening the footsteps of those who blazed trails for them, the current group of student-athletes have made dreams come true while inspiring those behind them.

According to a recent NCAA report, in 1974, fewer than 300,000 girls played high school sports. Today, there are more than three million female student-athletes. Title IX has led to strength in women's athletics today that could hardly be imagined when former president Richard Nixon signed the historic document.

In a celebration of Title IX's 48th anniversary, enjoy a few highlights from the 2019-20 athletic season created by UNCG student-athletes.
