Game Notes UNCG / WESTERN CAROLINA

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The scoreboard will reset to 0-0 when Western Carolina and UNC Greensboro (UNCG) meet for the second time in three days in a Southern Conference men's basketball game.

So that means the Spartans energetic 77-56 victory over the Catamounts Monday in Cullowhee means nothing now. Mohammed Abdulsalam's dunk and the Spartans' bench reaction to that play went viral thanks to being featured on SportsCenter and shared on the ESPN.com account. That was cool and will be remembered for a long time.

UNCG will be playing its final home game of the season. Ranked 16th in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25, the Spartans have won five straight at home and are 7-2 overall at the Greensboro Coliseum.

UNCG senior guard Isaiah Miller will be honored before the contest.

This is a critical contest for UNCG as it continues in its quest to hold off Furman and win the SoCon regular season title. The math is in the Spartans' favor. Two wins and the Spartans will earn the No. 1 seed in next week's SoCon Tournament.

Or one UNCG win and a Furman loss against either The Citadel or Wofford does the trick too.

At any rate, the Spartans are only focused on Western Carolina. They are fully aware that Wednesday's game will a hard-nosed battle. In Monday's win, UNCG transformed 17 Western Carolina turnovers into 27 points.

This will be the fourth time this season that UNCG has faced the same opponent in consecutive contests. UNCG split with Furman and Wofford and beat Samford twice in Birmingham.

The key to UNCG's success this season has been its balance, depth, and defensive tenacity. The Spartans make extra passes on offense and enjoy crisp rotations on defense, which helps explains they are among the national leaders in several categories.

UNCG is 13th nationally in offensive rebounds per game (13.29), 24th in rebounding (39.6), 30th in blocked shots (94), and 30th in turnover margin (+3.5). The Spartan total of 952 rebounds is second overall. UNCG is 22nd nationally in total steals (176).

During Monday's game against UNCG, junior Cory Hightower led Western Carolina offensively for the third straight game with 15 points. Hightower made four field goals and finished 6-for-7 at the free-throw line. Junior Kameron Gibson finished in double figures with 11 points and grabbed a team-best six rebounds while freshman Sin'Cere McMahon added 10 points.

UNCG concludes its regular season schedule by visiting East Tennessee State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
