UNCG / ETSU |
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team concludes its challenging 2020-21 regular season schedule on the road at East Tennessee State.
The Bucs were also the team the Spartans opened Southern Conference competition against on Jan. 2. ETSU defeated UNCG, 72-62, in that contest. The programs have headed in opposite directions since that game even though ETSU started SoCon play with wins in six of its first seven contests.
In the first meeting, ETSU opened the game making 10 of its first 16 shots to sprint to a 27-13 advantage. Leddarrius Brewer (18 points, 11 rebounds), Serrel Smith, Jr. (16 points) and Silas Adheke (nine points, 11 rebounds) led the Bucs, who hasn't played since falling to Mercer, 71-64, on Feb. 17.
UNCG senior guard
Isaiah Miller tallied 24 points in that contest.
A victory over ETSU would give the Spartans the distinction of defeating each SoCon program at least once this season. Even more symbolic than that, when the game begins Saturday, UNCG will become the only school in the SoCon to play all 18 SoCon contests. An incredible feat in this COVID environment.
UNCG still has plenty to play for in its season finale.
The Spartans know they will be either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in next week's Ingles SoCon Basketball Championship presented by General Shale. The succinct version is this: UNCG will earn the top seed and regular season championship with a win and Wofford victory over Furman.
So, go Terriers?
Samford, Western Carolina and The Citadel are locked into seeds eight through 10 in some order and will play on Friday, March 3. The Citadel is the No. 8 seed. Mercer and VMI still have an opportunity to finish as the No. 6 seed and avoid Friday's first-round game.
The Spartans, which dropped an 81-80 decision to Western Carolina in its last outing, have displayed plenty of resiliency following each SoCon setback. They have won their next game and haven't dropped consecutive contests since a three-game skid early in the season.
Below are various seeding outcomes based on the possibility of these game results:
