GREENSBORO, N.C. – Round one to Furman.

UNCG head men's basketball coach Wes Miller has captained the ship for 309 games as the leader of the Spartans, participated in countless others during his life, and watched a gazillion others.

He knows better than anybody that sometimes games like Monday's 19-point setback to Furman happen. While that won't ease the sting from dropping their second straight game to Furman by double digits dating back to last season, UNCG fans can take solace in that this performance was an anomaly in an otherwise bright season.

The best part is the Spartans will get an immediate opportunity in front of another nationally televised audience to respond to adversity and showcase their championship character against Furman in the second round of this heavyweight showdown.

UNCG is ranked 15th in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll. Meanwhile, Furman is 11th.

Hey, even the great ones, have an off night on occasion. Remember, the Los Angeles Clippers, a legit NBA title contender with two of the top 50 players in the sport, trailed by an unfathomable 50 points at intermission in a game to the Dallas Mavericks this season.

Lastly, here's the upshot, UNCG still is in The Catbird Seat to win the SoCon regular season championship and earn the No. 1 seed in the tournament if it handles business over its remaining seven games.

Again, nobody was happy with this game, but the big picture is still sunny for the Spartans. Remember, your outlook determines your outcome.

The top of the SoCon is tight with UNCG, Furman, ETSU, and Wofford all with three conference losses. Buckle up as the next 17 days promises to fun.

Last Time Out
  • Isaiah Miller led UNCG with 14 points and six steals.
  • Miller has 16 steals over UNCG's last three games.

  • Keyshaun Langley added 11 points for the Spartans, who shot 29 percent for the game.
  • Meanwhile, Furman senior Alex Hunter poured in a game-high 19 points.
  • After trailing by three points in the opening minutes, Furman used a 22-4 run and limited the Spartans to only two baskets from the 15:48 mark of the first half until the four-minute mark to build a 30-13 advantage.
  • Furman will be the third of fourth SoCon opponents that the Spartans are playing in consecutive contests.
