UNCG Falls In Overtime To Furman

Box Score GREENSBORO -- Shaun-Chris Joash scored a golden goal in the 97th minute, lifting Furman to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over host UNCG in overtime Saturday night.

Joash, a sophomore forward from England, scored the game-winner off assists from defenders Josh Hosie and Cole McLagan with 3:11 left in the first overtime period at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

"I told the guys afterward, 'Be disappointed. Be sad. Be upset. But allow this to fuel us," UNCG head coach Chris Rich said. "We started off conference play with two tough teams in Mercer and Furman. Traditionally, those are two of the better teams in our league. I still think we have a great opportunity ahead of us. ... If we take care of business, we have a great opportunity to go on a run."

The Spartans (4-2-1 overall, 0-1-1 SoCon) have four games remaining, all against Southern Conference opponents, starting at 3 p.m. Tuesday at VMI in Lexington, Va.

Sophomore midfielder Angel Bacho and sophomore forward Mani Austmann scored goals for UNCG, which held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the game.

"Overall, we played really well," Rich said. "I know that's crazy to say when you give up three goals and lose the game. But we really did play well. It was a real high-level college soccer game, and Furman is very good. They're usually one of the better teams in our league. ... But, you know, I learned something about us: We're very good, too. It's disappointing to lose, for sure, but I'm very happy overall about the performance. We did enough to win, and we were unfortunate not to."

Bacho scored his first goal of the season off an assist from senior midfielder Nelson Oceano just 1:46 into the match.

"I thought we were really good, actually," Rich said. "We executed our game plan perfectly early on and scored a goal in the second minute. It was part of our plan and the guys executed it, and for probably the first 30 or 35 minutes we were outstanding."

But then Furman's McLagan scored off a free kick in the 38th minute.

"That was disappointing," Rich said, "because that's like our fourth direct free kick to concede in the last five games. That's really disappointing because we should've walked away from that half ahead 1-0 instead of allowing (Furman) to equalize."

UNCG continued to control the pace, and Austmann scored in the 68th minute on a penalty kick to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead.

McLagan tied it in the 84th minute on an unassisted goal that Rich thought might have been an own goal or deflection.

"We were creating lots of chances, and we're up 2-1 with 10 minutes left," Rich said. "We need to see that game out and walk away with three points. But it didn't happen."

UNCG outshot Furman (4-1 overal, 2-0 SoCon) 18-13 and held an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Goalkeeper Niclas Wild, a freshman from Germany, made his fourth consecutive start and finished with four saves.
